Church at Thane: July 2008
http://churchatthane.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 27, 2008. Introducing Saul (part 1). Weekly Bible Study - I Samuel 9:1-16. The people of Israel want a king. God in his mercy and his overall sovereignity prepares one for them. We get a first glimpse of him in this passage. Saul has a number of striking attributes. He is from a prominent family (albeit from a small tribe), he is impressive - "a young man without equal among the Israelites" - and tall, standing a whole head taller than all the others. Contrast this ignorance with God's choic...

Church at Thane: September 2008
http://churchatthane.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 21, 2008. Its the end of September - and our last post was at the beginning of August! We know God has been speaking to us all in many ways in the interim. Lets not linger in the past (like the picture of the Bombay of old above) but lets move forward in God's grace - spurring each other on to love and good deeds (thanks Ryan for an excellent teaching this morning). We all need to kick each other a bit more! Andi and Sheba Eicher. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Andi and Sheba Eicher. The e...

Church at Thane: August 2008
http://churchatthane.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 3, 2008. Introducing Saul (part 2). Weekly Bible Study: 1 Sam. 9:15 - 10.8. Saul was the chosen one. God had chosen him, and told the greatest judge of Israel - the aging Samuel - that Saul would "deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines" (9:16). God doesn't make mistakes. But look at the way his chosen one starts out: Saul asks Samuel about how to get to the 'seer's house'! What a faux pas! After the meal the old man talks with the young man - spending time together on the roof ...

Church at Thane: Church on Fire
http://churchatthane.blogspot.com/2008/11/church-on-fire.html
Sunday, November 23, 2008. The first expression of the Church was an astonishing one. On the day of Pentecost - when the Holy Spirit publicly manifested Himself with power on the 120 believers who were waiting and praying in the upper room (Acts 2.1-13) - we see the radical and dramatic transformation that takes place. There is a hullabaloo as Jewish people from all over the Roman empire - present in Jerusalem for the festival prayers - hear the believers speaking in their own languages. What struck me s...

Church at Thane: Teaching - part 1
http://churchatthane.blogspot.com/2008/11/teaching-part-1.html
Monday, November 24, 2008. Teaching - part 1. Acts 2.42 They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching. What does it mean to teach? The very word implies a change from not-knowing to knowing. Of sharing. Of helping move forward. When we teach - when we truly teach - we share wisdom in a way that transforms a person. We need teaching because we are so far from who God is. Thomas Daniel taught us last week how much we need to become holy. God has saved us. He has paid the price for all the rotten...When ...

Church at Thane: Shepherd Boy
http://churchatthane.blogspot.com/2008/11/shepherd-boy.html
Friday, November 21, 2008. This note was also posted at Chai Chats with the Eichers. Our home-bible study on Friday night is looking at the life of David. Even today Palestine sees shepherds and soldiers - as the shot above shows - and sometimes the identities are shared and blurred. But with David we see two remarkable things in 1 Sam 18. Firstly he develops this deep soul relationship with Jonathan. A beautiful love and unity between kindred hearts. Who are our deepest friends? Or is our hope and reput...
