Let's enjoy Japanese music. The history of koto #1. Koto came from China to Japan more than 1,300 years ago. Koto symbolize dragon, so the name fo many part of koto contain 龍 (dragon). Koto is string insturument and it has 13 strings. The strings are supported by small 13 pillars. We play the koto with 3 picks, and they are put on thum, the index finger and the middle finger. Ther are 2 grops of koto in Japan. They are ikuta-ryu(生田流) and yamada-ryu(山田流). Those players is using different types of the picks.

Let's enjoy Japanese music. The history of koto #2. If someone ask me to tell the name which one of greatest koto player, I must answer “Tadao Sawai.”. Tadao Sawai was born in Aichi in 1937. He started to play the koto when he was 11 years old, empressed by his father who was syakuhachi(尺八) player. Shortly, he learned to play difficult tunes and he started to compose music at the age of 17. Then he entered Tokyo University of the Arts. He was young but he was a brilliant mucian. He is a great person.

Let's enjoy Japanese music. The history of koto #3. When Tadao Sawai was 23 years old, he graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. Then he released his first record “琴の幻想 koto no gensou ” (The fantasy of koto). At the age of 27, he organized “The society of ethnic music” with the other Japanese players. He tried not only Japanese music but also popular music, jazz and classical music. At that time, he got married to Kzue Takemoto. And he started to instruct koto and take pupils.
