In the two months since President Buhari came to power in Nigeria, we have seen three key trends, or operational developments, in Boko Haram’s activities:. 1 The resurgence of Boko Haram. 2 The regionalization of Boko Haram. 3 Greater alignment with Islamic State. On Tuesday 21 July 2015, Boko Haram launched a fresh attack. Before setting fire to homes. On Friday 17 July, 2015, two female suicide bombers. Execution Boko Haram Style. On Monday 3 March, 2015 I was interviewed by Sarah Kaplan for the Washington Post on the latest round of Boko Haram execution videos. In the interview I argue that Boko Haram’s tactics are developing as it is learning from similar tactics used by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. This specifically relates to Boko Haram’s execution style videos, but also an attempt to maintain and control the land in which it takes over.

Boko Haram Steps Up Attacks. Despite claims of Boko Haram having been defeated, we are seeing the opposite. Boko Haram may have been ejected from a number of areas they once controlled, but the movement remains firm in their resolve to carry out attacks, and on restoring their Caliphate. After a rallying call from Islamic State calling for intensified activities from affiliated militant groups during the month of Ramadan, there has been a big increase in Boko Haram activities, leaving over 200 dead.
