Pack | Zambia Grows

https://zambiagrows.wordpress.com/pack

Laini's thoughts on Peace Corps, agroforestry, and Zambia. February 2015 – April 2017. Prior to flying 8,000 miles across the world, I posted my packing list and some rationale. I’ve learned a few things since then, and feel more knowledgeable about what a Volunteer should consider packing for two years in a mud hut. My suitcase mostly just sits in my hut. Don’t spend much money on it. Packing cubes, compressible clothing bags, waterproof storage ziploc bags. Carabeaners. A million purposes. 1 light jack...

Village Eats | Zambia Grows

https://zambiagrows.wordpress.com/2016/12/12/village-eats

Laini's thoughts on Peace Corps, agroforestry, and Zambia. February 2015 – April 2017. December 12, 2016. I was lucky that my village is decently close to a town with a grocery store. Just an hour bike ride through the Zambian bush, and a well-stocked grocery store had most of my shopping list all in one place. It was a cherished convenience. About a month ago, that grocery store burned down. 5 days after the fire. So losing the grocery store. Egg sandwich: a treat because I seldom have bread or cheese.

Laini's thoughts on Peace Corps, agroforestry, and Zambia. February 2015 – April 2017. Okay Let’s Go: Zambian Transport. November 16, 2016. November 15, 2016. Volunteers are not allowed to drive cars, ride motorbikes, planes are a rarity and way beyond my living allowance, hitching far stretches is risky, and our mountain bikes aren’t built for touring. This leaves public road transport as the only option: buses, minibuses, and shared taxis. I’ll get to those in a bit. So already, my American sense of ne...

Laini's thoughts on Peace Corps, agroforestry, and Zambia. February 2015 – April 2017. Election, Competition, Exam. September 12, 2016. September 12, 2016. I have not blogged in over a month. So, what’s going on? Well, here’s what. What’s going on? I was not selected as a winner in the competition. However, even as a finalist I was able to reach a larger audience. It ain’t easy to keep a blog running out here, but it’s become a fulfilling project during my service. Cooking dinner at sundown. Click to sha...

Make | Zambia Grows

Laini's thoughts on Peace Corps, agroforestry, and Zambia. February 2015 – April 2017. A hobby of mine is crafting, particularly sewing. This page is to document the ongoing list of DIY projects I’ve done, to give ideas for village-appropriate home improvement, and to display bits of living in a hut. Curtains: fabric, nails, soft wire. Jewelry holder: broken hair clip, nailed to the wall and held up by a piece of wire. Rug: 6 meters of chitenge material, ripped into 2″ strips and braided together. Bike p...
