In 2012, researchers from the UWC Dept. of Computer Science established contacts in Mankosi, Eastern Cape, where some of its students had come from. A senior researcher decided to propose mesh networking in the area. This is a cheap, low-energy system using scattered node devices rather than central masts or beacons. Why don’t we just make a Zenzeleni network covering the whole country? Network size depends on the range of the signal between the devices used. For example the Mesh Potatoes used at Mankosi use a WiFi signal that goes some hundreds of metres, up to a few kilometres with the right antenna. But the other limit is the human organisation involved. The co-op running Zenzeleni Networks Mankosi took a few years to reach full operating status. We aim to connect such co-ops countrywide. This is Mankosi in the Eastern Cape. Here, the community, with some help from researchers, created and owns its own telephone and internet company . Local calls are free and calls to other networks cost half of what they would on those other networks. Data costs a tenth of the market price. The project, officially registered as a co-operative ( co-op for short) is called Zenzeleni do it yourselves in isiXhosa. What led to this amazing community initiative? Of course, the short answer is Prices!

Zenzeleni Primary School is situated along the busy London road and is surrounded by an informal settlement. The school started as a feeding scheme headed by Mr Malinga at 16th Avenue. The first principal of the school was Mrs Elizabeth Mannini Koalepe in 1962. In 1988 the school moved to the current premises and now has 29 educators and 7 public service staff.
