Go Weekend at Diego's
http://www.nateeagle.com/2013/11/18/go-weekend-at-diegos
November 18, 2013. Go Weekend at Diego's. This weekend my parents-in-law Mark and Vickie traveled up from Charlottesville to watch my son so that I could travel down to Virginia Beach to spend the weekend at my little brother Diego’s. House playing go. (We are both students of Yuan Zhou. Which makes us brothers. Any student who began before me is my older sibling, any student who began after me is my younger sibling.). With Shifu, so we know each other’s go very well. My second match was against Zhaoyan,...

Don't Break the Problem Chain
http://www.nateeagle.com/2014/08/26/dont-break-the-problem-chain
August 26, 2014. Don't Break the Problem Chain. I have a many-month losing streak going against Nathan, a 1d fellow student of Yuan Zhou. And I barely managed an even 3-3 result at the US Go Congress. I was down 1-3 as of Thursday). I’m determined to do something about this relative weakness by doing go problems every single day. I’ve begun a go problem chain, based on Jerry Seinfeld’s chain concept. Don’t break the chain, he said again for emphasis. But the thought of dismantling the chain really bother...

Half-Point Loss
http://www.nateeagle.com/2014/01/17/half-point-loss
January 17, 2014. At December’s group lesson, I played Nathan for the fourth time. I was up two games to one, at the time. We did nigiri for color, which Nathan won; he chose white. I asked, curious, “Do you always prefer white? Rules — “I feel better off with white.”. It showed that I still have a hard time not over-valuing captured stones: because of the white stones I captured on the bottom, I just had this feeling. Review after our game. It’s hard for me to get too down about this game since Na...

Killing Shapes: March 2010
http://www.killingshapes.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 30, 2010. You'll Put Your Eye Out! I've noticed this for a long time, even around my current 10kyu-ish level, and it needs to stop. Japanese for 'quick-turn', sorta; pronounced 'hah-nay', not 'hain') on the first line if you're desperately needing an eye! Well, unless you have enough room). Here's a generic scenario. You have four stones over the first line, and you only need to form ONE eye. And it's your turn. You'll have no problems! Typical Hane on First Line. Opponent Throws in First.

Game Review: Nate vs. Matt
http://www.nateeagle.com/2014/02/06/game-review-nate-vs-matt
February 06, 2014. Game Review: Nate vs. Matt. This is a game I played recently against my younger brother, Matt. (All fellow students of my teacher, Yuan Zhou. Are my siblings. Students who preceded me are “older” and students who came after me are “younger”.). I met Matt at the 2011 Maryland Open. Over a go board; I was 10k and he was 11k. Matt and I talked after our game and I told him about taking lessons; he became a student himself shortly afterward. Never help your opponent! My peep in the upper l...

Six stones vs. Shifu
http://www.nateeagle.com/2014/01/09/six-stones-vs-shifu
January 09, 2014. Six stones vs. Shifu. I take lessons every two weeks from Yuan Zhou. Via Skype and KGS. Every so often, he’ll play a simul game against Diego and me in which we have six handicap stones with free placement. Free placement is an astonishing advantage with handicap stones, allowing you to form your own structures rather than the standard star-point placement. Someday I’ll beat him.

Life and Death Problem and Game Record from Yuan Zhou's Monthly Group Go Lesson
http://www.nateeagle.com/2014/06/24/life-and-death-problem-and-game-record-from-yuan-zhous-monthly-group-go-lesson
June 24, 2014. Life and Death Problem and Game Record from Yuan Zhou's Monthly Group Go Lesson. At our monthly go lessons, Shifu. Has a problem set out on the board in the front of the room when we walk in. We have a lot of time to try to solve it: it’s embarrassing how infrequently I manage to do so correctly. Even this month, with an easier-than-usual problem, I failed to get 100% of the correct result. The challenge is always to tell Shifu what is the best result? Who paid for it, and Bill Cobb, who p...
