Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 20:08 9.30.2007. It's been raining for the past couple of days, gross. It's also getting a lot colder all of a sudden, which is no good for me. It's actually pretty sad, when it gets below 22C (71.6F) in my house I run for my sweater. Lately it's been getting a lot colder than that when the sun goes down. sometimes as low as 13C! It was 1,800 yen to get in! No, here the movies get cheaper after 8pm. This is to take advantage of the hours public transportation r...

Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 16:15 9.25.2008. Korea was a smashing success. I was really blessed that everything on the timeline went like clockwork, and even things that didn't appear to be in the end fit in perfectly. Ethan and I stayed principally in Seoul, leaving only to visit the DMZ and JSA (Joint Security Area). Beyond that there was lots of eating and walking around, and when neither of those appealed we stopped in one of two places. A jimjilbang or DVD bang. The other place we went t...

Follow me on twitter. A good weekend, and other stories. Posted by Lyle at 11:59 1.29.2008. Yesterday I was teaching elementary school, and we were going over things in the classroom. When introducing new words, I usually try and give them the first sound as a hint. Usually someone in the class has heard the word before, and they get to look smart. So I was pointing at a desk, and saying "de". "des". "deeeesssss". Suddenly, a child shouts out "DEATH BEAM! The morning of the tournament is all novice wrest...

Follow me on twitter. Stop shocking me japan! Posted by Lyle at 15:46 2.27.2008. I'm not sure if it's because of the lack of humidity, the clothes I'm wearing or what. but I get shocked at least ten times a day. It's horrible! One would think I would learn all the places I frequently get shocked, and figure out a way to not get shocked by them. Truth is, I bumble into new ways to get shocked every day! Posted by Lyle at 15:21 2.24.2008. Snow has fallen again, and the winds are strong. Yucky. But,...Gradu...

Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 09:19 11.21.2007. It's finally happened: 0 degrees. Actually, our overnight lows have been ranging as low as -3. This is degrees Celsius of course, but it's still damn cold. I was shocked the other day to find ice on my windshield: ICE. The denial is over. I finally bought kerosene for my heater, and next week I'll have to buy snow tires. Posted by Lyle at 11:10 11.18.2007. This weekend was the annual Harvest Festival at the Coco Winery in Ashikaga. I had a great w...

Follow me on twitter. Is the world excited about Obama? Posted by Lyle at 12:20 1.29.2009. I can't speak for all of the world, but the answer here in rural Japan is a resounding yes. Throughout the election time I heard lots of "Yes we can" from the students, but since the inauguration it's been non-stop. On the day I was congratulated by everyone, especially the students. They almost all also said something along the lines of "オバマがかっこいいね。 Obama is pretty cool, huh? In other news, that was a fast 7 weeks!

Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 08:15 7.29.2007. Well, here we are. T-minus 7 days until I leave for Japan. An auspicious day for the launch of jet-7.net, don't you think? It should be an interesting transition. As for what to expect, I imagine it'll be a lot like lostinbenin. Was Lots of me telling you what it's like in MY world and pictures. I have a few ideas to expand the site, but for the moment they're secret. Oh, I should mention over on the right the first link is Ethan.

Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 13:34 8.11.2008. The season is finally over. That is to say, everyone has finally left me. If I was, wouldn't I have a lot more pictures? In any case, I had a good time. And I guess that's what it's really about. I think it's really that when I'm on a time limited schedule I want to do a lot. Living in a country makes it easy to take things in slowly, but touristing puts you into a constrained block that my schedule-dependent tendencies desire to fill. The deer wou...

Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 16:30 10.31.2007. It finally happened. I got a cold. It's only natural, as I work with children and about 50% of them are also currently sick. The worst part is it's not bad enough to stay home. just bad enough to be annoying. Multiple boys in skirts. A boy in a bowling pin costume. A boy in a shiny metallic suit. A girl with a mustache. Many girls dancing with a single chopstick each. A male teacher in a skirt. It was something else. I don't think this type of thi...

Follow me on twitter. Posted by Lyle at 11:38 11.12.2008. This year more than 250,000 people wanted to run Tokyo Marathon. Unfortunately only 7% of those potential applicants will actually get to run. It looks like I'm going to be one of them! I got my confirmation e-mail last week, so now all I have to do is pay. Well, I guess that's not all I have to do. I do actually have to run the 42 kilometers (26 miles) in March. It's going to be so awesome. I'm totally pumped. No pride, no shame. I'd tend to agre...
