The Yellow Apron: Mutant Pygmy Corn
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2011/08/mutant-pygmy-corn.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Thursday, August 11, 2011. That's it. I'm done trying to grow vegetables. This is why grocery stores were invented. How do you manage to grow corn that doesn't even sprout all its kernels? I mean, even if you grow veggies that are smaller than the ones in the market, they're complete pieces. These were so awful, I didn't even try to eat them. One was so scary, I didn't even finish taking off the husk. I'm going to stick to the cooking part of the food chain from now on.

The Yellow Apron: Cranberry-Almond Biscotti
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2012/05/cranberry-almond-biscotti.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Wednesday, May 16, 2012. This week's tea snack is biscotti. While I prefer chewy cookies, sometimes I feel like dunking. The reason biscotti are so hard is to keep them from spoiling. They're the beef jerky of cookies. They are also way. Easier to make than I thought they would be. Think scones or sugar cookies, only even easier because you don't have to cut anything in or get an appliance dirty. I adapted this from an Allrecipes. Budget-wise, I got the dried cranberries an...

The Yellow Apron: Grilled Polenta with Maple and Berries
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2015/07/grilled-polenta-with-maple-and-berries.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Thursday, July 23, 2015. Grilled Polenta with Maple and Berries. This is what happens when foodies try to reinvent the hoecake. The recipe isn't much different than the one for fried leftover cornmeal mush on the back of the Alber's box. You just grill it instead, which was the point of the Times article. About grilling dessert. Papa Smurf once told me about breakfasts similar to this when he was a boy during WWII and rationing limited your food choices. I got tired of havi...

The Yellow Apron: Canned Nectarines
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2015/07/canned-nectarines.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Saturday, July 11, 2015. I went on a canning frenzy because Sprouts had all kinds of fruit for some of the best prices we're going to see all summer. One day, I made strawberry vanilla and cherry vanilla jams (small batch, so they shared the bean). The next day, the nectarines were finally ripe enough to use. The original plan was to make pie filling, but I couldn't find ClearJel. For those scared of canning, consider this the recipe for a poached nectarine. You can hav...

The Yellow Apron: Oven-Dried Tomatoes
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2011/08/oven-dried-tomatoes.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Friday, August 26, 2011. I found this in The Essential Appetizers Cookbook. Which has some amazing and impressive appetizers in it. There aren't really any spread recipes that I haven't already done, but these tomatoes can go well on crackers. They are even better accents for salads. I can see myself just going at them with a fork, too. Think sun-dried tomato, but you made it yourself, and they aren't rubbery like some of the sun-dried ones can get. 1 tsp dried thyme. In mo...

The Yellow Apron: Bag-Ripened Tomatoes
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2015/05/bag-ripened-tomatoes.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Saturday, May 30, 2015. I have three different varieties of tomato growing: cherry, beefsteak, and Bradley. After almost drowning Brad last year. He has become a hearty plant and is putting out good-sized fruit. Day 2 Already ripening. Wash the fruit first. Never wash fruit or vegetables until you're ready to use them. They last longer because imperfections are less likely to develop mold. I just wiped the tomatoes with a paper towel and put them in the bag. Π - Easy as pie.

The Yellow Apron: Pickled Green Cherry Tomatoes
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2013/09/pickled-green-cherry-tomatoes.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Saturday, September 28, 2013. Pickled Green Cherry Tomatoes. I got a little overzealous while trimming the cherry tomato plant and ended up with a dozen green tomatoes on the ends of what I thought were dead branches. I also found one disgusting tomato caterpillar that I screamed at and dropped a few times before throwing it and its branch in the greens bin. It can munch away at discarded leaves until trash day. As for the all-important question of taste, they taste like "p...

The Yellow Apron: Banbury Tarts
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2015/07/banbury-tarts.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Monday, July 20, 2015. I clipped this one out of the L.A. Times's annual Holiday Cookie. Contest. I thought it was from last year, but the link says 2010. Either way, they are very good. In the fridge and decided to use that. It made for an unusually tangy cookie, but saved me a trip to the store for jam when I decided to make them at the last moment for tea. I'm posting a half recipe, as it still made over two dozen cookies. I used the egg white in the biscotti. 4 Bake coo...

The Yellow Apron: Not-Refried Beans
http://pantrycreations.blogspot.com/2011/01/not-refried-beans.html
Creating recipes for everyday. Thursday, January 13, 2011. Because "mashed pintos" just doesn't have the same ring to it. Pintos are a powerhouse of nutrition, as are most legumes. Measured by 1/4 C dry beans, there's something like 26g of protein, half your daily fiber, and only 130 calories. All this for about 10¢ per serving. It's what you add to them that tends to make us think of beans as fattening. 1 C dry pinto beans. 1/2 C minced onion. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Book of Afternoon Tea.
