John Nez Illustration: February 2015
http://johnnez.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 28. Freezer delivery from Burkina-Faso! Yesterday we had a new freezer delivered (old one died). It was bought online and the delivery notification was via a computer robot voice phone call. The robot even called with a 30 minute warning. So sure as shooting, there the truck was, just like the robot said. The truck parked in the alley. It turned out that the two freezer delivery men were from Africa - or more precisely from Burkina-Faso! I got to chat a bit with Djbril, telling him tha...

John Nez Illustration: April 2015
http://johnnez.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30. It was fun having a bunch of my fictional illustration buddies drop by the studio. So I captured the event on film. lol! Thursday, April 23. Back in the BC stone age, (before computers). Back in the BC stone age, (before computers) I used to make my promotion cards with cut and paste. And with press-type. I hated how press-type would start curling up and the letters started to crack and fall apart. And how I'd run out of zeros and use an O instead. Saturday, April 18. Monday, April 13.

John Nez Illustration: The 'French Toast Brush' - don't leave home without it!
http://johnnez.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-french-toast-brush-dont-leave-home.html
Tuesday, June 2. The 'French Toast Brush' - don't leave home without it! I think I fell for the socks on this one. I had to get out my 'french toast brush' to correctly render the breakfast. It was interesting working from the rough sketch to a rough finish - with lots of fun on the way getting there. And this child reminded me of my own child way back when. at the start when life was all wonderful. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A wise foxy tale about being happy. Spot Saves the Day. John Nez Illustration: The latest 'bear update'
http://johnnez.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-latest-bear-update.html
Sunday, June 7. The latest 'bear update'. And of course everyone is waiting for the latest 'bear update' - well here it is. As you can see if you scroll down through a little, the figure began in a swirl of vague forms driven by the gesture. But now it's coming right along. taking care not to lose the spontaneity of the rough sketch. My secret sauce will add some rough splashy color to increase the spontaneity. Tuesday, July 14. Part 3 - How to run away to NYC to become a children's book illustrator. Our bumbling saga continues as our spanking new Knickerbocker finds his way around town. full of pep, vim and vigor. Next problem. where the heck was I going to live? I thought I’d outsmart the commute one day and locate on Staten Island! I loved my little room at first sight. A little sunlit room facing south on the second floor of a walk up brownstone. It was a really narrow room. you could almost rea...He said&#...

Having arrived in the big city with his duffel bag stuffed with illusions, ignorance, innocence and pluck. along with hopes and dreams and socks. Ah, New York. the city of True Egalitarianism. What a town! The days that followed were fun and alive. New York doesn’t let you dwell within too much. You c...I took righ...

John Nez Illustration: May 2015
http://johnnez.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 29. My basic working method is simple. Basically my working method is simple - I sketch and draw and draw and sketch until the tabletop is covered with sketches. Then the sketches are scanned into Photoshop. and when the pile of papers on my desk looks like it's becoming a fire hazard I tidy all the sketches into a corner by the cupboard, and keep on drawing. It's actually quite effective. Bridge keeps track of everything else. Monday, May 25. Today's chapter of 'Draw It Quick! Friday, May 22.

John Nez Illustration: Part 5 - How to run away to NYC to become a children's book illustrator
http://johnnez.blogspot.com/2015/07/part-5-how-to-run-away-to-nyc-to-become.html
Tuesday, July 21. Part 5 - How to run away to NYC to become a children's book illustrator. The children's book illustration class with Maurice Sendak was held in a corner window studio on the 11th floor, high over 5th Avenue. I remember I was so nervous on the first day. waiting for the famous Mr. Sendak to appear. I’d have never guessed he’d turn out to be a disarmingly unpretentious regular guy from Brooklyn. I loved Walter and Niiad Einsel's class too. They were so calm and focused and seemed to i...
