My adventures through various cookbooks and culinary challenges
April | 2013 | Abberley Kitchen
https://abberleykitchen.wordpress.com/2013/04
My adventures through various cookbooks and culinary challenges. Monthly Archives: April 2013. Into (and out of) the wild. It has certainly been a while since my last post, which I note was summer-themed. It feels like we are well clear of that season; despite the sunny day as I write, the angle of the sun is decidedly wintry. Along with the autumn-winter season comes another sort of season: the roar. I feel that should be capitalised. The Roar! Evidence of Husband going hunting. This also required a bit...
What to do with walnuts… | Abberley Kitchen
https://abberleykitchen.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/what-to-do-with-walnuts
My adventures through various cookbooks and culinary challenges. What to do with walnuts…. My boss mentioned to me one day that he has a walnut tree, and therefore an excess of walnuts, and therefore did I want some walnuts for baking? There was a slight misunderstanding about the definition of. However: I was imagining an ice cream container or two, but what I received was a recycling-bin-full! Admittedly it was half detritus and bad nuts… but I had walnuts for baking, so bake I must! 1 cup caster sugar.
Inspired by Ombra | Abberley Kitchen
https://abberleykitchen.wordpress.com/2014/05/17/inspired-by-ombra
My adventures through various cookbooks and culinary challenges. It has been ages since my last post… and I think that was the opening line of my last post too! There are many reasons for my blog silence, the chief of which is writers block. But no more! I have been inspired! I recently visited the lovely, cafe- and restaurant-laden city of Wellington, and while there I went to Ombra. Red wine poached pears with blue cheese mascarpone. And 4 whole cloves. Then turn over and simmer for another 10 minutes.
Leeky homes | Abberley Kitchen
https://abberleykitchen.wordpress.com/2012/08/04/leeky-homes
My adventures through various cookbooks and culinary challenges. Yes, at this time of year I am sure there are many people facing the challenge of leeky homes. Leeks being in season, they’re an affordable way to keep fresh veges on the table in winter, but how to use them? I’m a fan). I did fry some up to have with bangers and mash, and it turned out much like onion, with a milder flavour. This was quite an exciting discovery for me! Took me long enough? This recipe, though, comes from. And 1/4 cup milk.
When life hands you oranges | Abberley Kitchen
https://abberleykitchen.wordpress.com/2012/09/12/when-life-hands-you-oranges
My adventures through various cookbooks and culinary challenges. When life hands you oranges. As recently mentioned on Facebook, I have been having some citrus-related drama. So away I go, happily grating the zest off 2 “lemons”,. And dumping it into the saucepan along with 100g butter,. Whisked together with 1. The first thing to raise my suspicion was that the zest seemed a bit thin… but never mind! However when it came to adding the juice from 2 lemons. I call that a success. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Running on Empty? | just_a_yarn
https://justayarn.wordpress.com/2014/10/14/running-on-empty
Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. October 14, 2014. I’ve been doing a lot of driving lately…a lot…Normally that wouldn’t bother me, but when it’s only part of a very full week, and I’m already so tired – that’s when it becomes more of a PROBLEM. About a month ago, I hopped in my car to make yet another trip to my workplace (50. I needed rest, oh how desperate I was for some rest! AND I’m feeling less and less capable as I learn more and more…. In an average life, 11 years of time are missed by l...
February | 2015 | just_a_yarn
https://justayarn.wordpress.com/2015/02
Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. Monthly Archives: February 2015. February 10, 2015. Like a leaf in the Autumn time, naked and exposed. Is my heart, my thoughts, my feelings. If not treated with due tender and care. Surely one will become like a toxin to thy self and others. They say that community can hold one up. They say that being alone allows one to think. But which is the right path to take? Where does my help come from? The act of letting others in. The act of letting one know thyself.

I see an object in a new way I’ll explain more about this later on. This often leads to the idea behind my writings. I have a title in my head, but have to elaborate on that idea, working it over until it makes sense (often they make sense in my head, but it’s different when putting pen to page! As I flesh it out. This got me thinking! And that’s when I got the title...
Broken Vessels | just_a_yarn
https://justayarn.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/broken-vessels
Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. August 7, 2015. It has taken years to get to this place. Each new day, breaking a little more. The heart, the mind, the soul, can only be broken so much before it has no choice but to surrender. Abandoned. Forsaken. Rejected. It’s how I feel. It’s how you feel. With every pain, every unbearable grief, every tear both cried and desperately withheld. You were there. But I didn’t see, so it wasn’t enough. Now I am nothing but a broken vessel. Each new day break...

Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. January 31, 2014. 8230;and then you were gone…. I used to always enjoy looking back at the photos of us together – from the first time I met you, what a wonderful adventure that was, so many memories once took hostage of my mind. But not now. My mind seems to be filled with other things. I’m busy you see! Remember how I always promised that i’d plan a second trip back to visit you and your family? December 9, 2013. Yes I had the number of NCEA credits I needed, ...

Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. March 17, 2014. 8230;I will wait…. Part Two of my most recent post: …and then you were gone…written from the perspective of the Sponsor Child. Torn and tattered in my hands, I hold a photo of us. I remember it like it was yesterday – your trip to my village. I remember your enthusiasm to meet all of my friends. I remember that for some reason you kept coming back to me – was I somehow different to all the other children? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. August 7, 2015.

Economy of Grace | just_a_yarn
https://justayarn.wordpress.com/2014/03/19/economy-of-grace
Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. March 19, 2014. When I think back over my life, in particular, the last four years or so, I can certainly pin-point the areas of my life where I have been shown grace. There’s plenty to chose from! I was thinking the other day – how much grace do i actually show toward others? What if we lived by the rules of a different economy…an economy of grace? But I’ve gotta ask, what would this economy of grace look like? Here’s some ideas though:. And by that, I understa...

Thoughts about the life that surrounds us. May 21, 2014. It’s 4:30am and I’m abruptly awoken by the blaring of a smoke-alarm. How rude. In the semi-comatosed state I was in, there were a few thoughts that went through my head within the next three seconds:. Wow, that bread-maker sure is loud! 8230;wait….we’re not making bread. Oh that’s the smoke-alarm…not to worry it won’t be a. Fire….it’ll turn itself off if I ignore it. Think i’m wrong? What I want to know is where did this come from? And to further t...
