What is seen as ‘academic’ writing is contestable and always emergent (Archer and Breuer, 2016). Evolving Academic Writing Resources. The incommensurability of academic writing(s). Capturing perspectives (as though there were any point in time at which they remain stationary). What intrigues me about ‘academic’ writing is that it is referred to as a static entity that can be taught yet it is as slippery and untransferable as the array of perspectives on knowledge that it tries to embody. Academic writing...

Communities of Practice (CoPs). The rationale for using Twitter for Academic Purposes (TAP) in my EAP class this term is that it has the potential affordance of nurturing a community of practice, as outlined by Wenger. The CEMistry of EAP. January 15, 2015. I am in the process of establishing in-sessional provision at my new institution so this was a timely read – Sloan and Porter’s ‘Changing international student and business staff perceptions of in-sessional EAP: using the CEM model’ (2010). In the EAP syllabus. For this reason EAP tutors are often seen to be subordinate in some way – at the mercy of subject specialism (here the authors cite Hamp-Lyons and Hyland). Which relates to the. Contextualisation essentially ...

Unchartered waters | Doctoral EAP

https://doctoraleap.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/unchartered-waters

A collection of experiences, reflections, resources and rants. July 13, 2015. We are really pleased to have a post from a great supporter of DoctoralEAP – Julia Molinari. The posts on this blog have so far broached the ‘generalities’ of doing doctoral work, generalities that probably apply to anybody doing research. So, for example, we have read about the complexity involved in deciding what research to do ( https:/ doctoraleap.wordpress.com/2015/04/24/complex-dynamic-systems/. But this is what doing res...

Progress & Plausibility | The TEAPing Point

https://theteapingpoint.wordpress.com/2013/01/13/progress-plausibility

Are we, as EAP professionals, ‘just’ language teachers? I think the answer has to be no. It is our responsibility to provide for our learners an induction, of sorts, into the practices of the Academy. We need to demystify the road that lies ahead. This means we need to engage our learners not just in language practice, but also in academic practice. We now contribute to sessions in the Doctoral Training Programme. We’ve designed a well-received pre-UG induction into writing and plagiarism avoidance.
