Chicago has never been more than a half-day’s drive away from me, and I’ve been there many times. There is plenty to do, but it can be a challenge getting around by car (parking is terrible and very expensive) and none of the attractions are cheap, either. My mom lived near Seattle for nearly 8 years, so I had the opportunity to visit a few times and really enjoy the vibe here. I did a few touristy things, like Pike’s Market, the Locks and fish hatcheries, the seaside, the Cascade mountains for snowboarding and waterfalls, and a casino. I also got to just hang out in some small towns near the mountains. Things I wish I’d done:. 3 on the Road.

In 2009 I was invited to Tulum, Mexico, to stay in an ocean-side villa for a week with my mom, her boyfriend, and a few of my own friends. Beach vacations are generally not really my thing, but stay for free? Ok, I’m there. Plus it was an opportunity to do something interesting with my mom.
