To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. It is not your domain. From a technical perspective, I would argue that a DDD project is nothing but a clear and protected domain. Working on lots of legacy code though, I observe common mistakes to identify what is inside the domain, and what is outside. Your data model is not your domain model. It is a really common mistake to use a data model as a domain model. I think ORM. Your view model is not your domain model. I go crazy when I find a model ob...

To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Trend with an ambiguous feeling. I highly value (smart) people with different opinions about testing, craftsmanship and software, but at first glance, DHH looks pretty bumptious to me. Who’s this guy I’ve never heard of before who decides that one of my favourite development tool is dead? I don’t think so, they are great tools useful in given contexts. Why I read it. Influence, something we share. It is a really pleasant book to read. The content is f...
Readability | Ouarzy's Blog
http://www.ouarzy.com/2016/10/24/readability
To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Much focus in our industry is on how we can write code faster. We want super productive IDE, high level language and huge frameworks to protect us from the hard reality of building software. In my opinion it’s more important to find how we can write maintainable code by focusing on readability. Lots of frameworks promise faster development by getting rid of the plumbing, this dirty stuff we don’t want to deal with. It’s really irritating to find...
Clarifying MVVM with DDD | Ouarzy's Blog
http://www.ouarzy.com/2016/04/14/clarifying-mvvm-with-ddd
To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Clarifying MVVM with DDD. I regularly see a lot of questions around MVVM, last one. Only a few weeks ago. The problem is usually the same: what should be a Model, and what should be a ViewModel? We can’t really blame developers, because references online are not really good, especially MSDN’s one. Models (mainly because of ORMs. In this case, a question arises: when I use only one Model in one ViewModel, do I need a ViewModel at all? DDD to the rescue.
DDD | Ouarzy's Blog

To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. I never was comfortable with the idea of. Use DDD only in complex domain. Is a mantra used by DDD. Experts to avoid the Silver Bullet Syndrom. It is really convenient to avoid uncomfortable discussion. Why do I mind? We’d like to know what is a complex domain to know when to use DDD. From a strategic perspective, I already argued that we could always use it. The remaining question is: when should I use DDD from a tactical perspective. My theory is tha...
Abstracting the reality | Ouarzy's Blog
http://www.ouarzy.com/2017/01/04/abstracting-the-reality
To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Let’s define the reality as the consequence of all previous Facts. Nobody knows every fact from the past. And when we share some facts, we don’t give them the same importance. We build our reality based on the facts we believe to know, and give them some importance based on what we think do matter. Building a shared abstract reality (i.e. software) is exceptionally hard. How to choose a reality. In the excellent paper Out of the tar pit. I think we of...
Mob programming is a great BDD implementation | Ouarzy's Blog

To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Mob programming is a great BDD implementation. Time, in the. A few weeks ago, a co-worker proposed to experiment mob programming. I expected to enjoy this practice, I was actually delighted. We are a pizza team. We did it in a meeting room, not in an open space. We had a computer, a big screen to display the code, two keyboards and two mouses allowing two developers to code without having to switch. The test suite showed again how useful it is, we saw...
Developers don’t like people | Ouarzy's Blog
http://www.ouarzy.com/2016/11/27/developers-dont-like-people
To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Developers don’t like people. Any idea who are William M. Cannon and Dallas K. Perry? Neither do I until a few months ago, and that’s a shame because they have a part of responsibility in the image of software developers. They have discovered that we don’t like people. How do you hire for a new job? I bought the paper. Long ago, E. K. Strong, Jr. advanced the notion that individuals interested in the same activities and things, whether the...It was an...
Why events matters? | Ouarzy's Blog
http://www.ouarzy.com/2015/04/11/why-events-matters
To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. Most of the time, we justify Event Driven Architecture with performance issue. So we believe it only fits for really complex software. As we know, test coverage is a side effect of doing TDD. The main purpose is that it improves your design. In the same way, good performance is a side effect of an Event Driven Architecture. The main purpose is that it leads to a very decoupled, and Domain centric design. It is really close of what happened in real lif...
A Craftsman work-life balance | Ouarzy's Blog
http://www.ouarzy.com/2016/09/14/a-craftsman-work-life-balance
To become a software craftsman…Or die in the attempt. A Craftsman work-life balance. I don’t feel comfortable when I hear people explaining how hard we should work to be successful . Mainly because success is subjective, it only makes sense in a given context. For example, Uncle Bob. In The Clean Coder. Asserts that a professional developer must work around 60 to 70 hours per week. 40 hours for his job, the rest of the time to improve his skills. Professionals have a personal life. Whatever the job and t...
