A little something about theory. Saturday, April 26, 2008. She says that any romance story involving a minority where there is no struggle with race does not appeal to white publishers. It seems that minorities had to fit into a specific mold just to find their place in books. If they didn't fit into the stereotypical role or caused racial tension in the book, then there was no place for them. Friday, April 25, 2008. http://www.alittlesomethingabouttheory.blogspot.com/2008/04/feminists-pose-interesting-question.html

A little something about theory. Wednesday, April 2, 2008. Feminists pose an interesting question. Virginia Woolf's essay "A Room of One's Own" especially the section titled Shakespeare's Sister seeks to answer the question are women given the same opportunities as men? From her essay it seems that women are not, but this was an essay written how many years ago? Is this essay still relevant to our culture? April 8, 2008 at 8:37 AM. a little something about theory: March 2008

http://www.alittlesomethingabouttheory.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

A little something about theory. Monday, March 31, 2008. Does your education and class distinction affect your tastes? I believe Bourdieu would say yes, and so would I. Like I said, I'm not the brightest light bulb in the pack). I think you have to be exposed to something before you can develop a taste for it, and I think a lot of that exposure comes through education. People who do not have access to higher eductation may not be familiar with the works of Flannery O'Connor let alone appreciate them.

A little something about theory. Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Monday, February 25, 2008. The intentional fallacy. Does the author's intention really matter? Now, I don't think that all poems should be written in a romantic style as an outpouring of emotions inexplicably linked to the poet, but when poetry is written like that I see the value in knowing a little bit about the poet. I also see value in looking at poetry as a craft or an art form. Saturday, February 23, 2008. Thursday, February 21, 2008.

http://www.alittlesomethingabouttheory.blogspot.com/2008/04/i-read-barbara-smiths-essay-toward.html

A little something about theory. Saturday, April 12, 2008. Smith goes on to say that biggest "mishandling of Black women writers by whites is paralleled more often by their not being handled at all, particularly in feminist theory" (2305). When race and feminism are discussed in literature they are usually separated. The two are rarely discussed together, and this especially applies to lesbian black women. Papadzules: Walter Benjamin and Tim Burton

http://papadzules.blogspot.com/2008/05/walter-benjamin-and-tim-burton.html

Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Walter Benjamin and Tim Burton. In telling the story of my father's life, it's impossible to separate fact from fiction, the man from the myth. The best I can do is to tell it the way he told me. It doesn't always make sense and most of it never happened. but that's what kind of story this is. Watch "Big Fish" finale. Papadzules: Personal Economy and the Ability to Perceive

http://papadzules.blogspot.com/2008/05/personal-economy-and-ability-to.html

Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Personal Economy and the Ability to Perceive. That being said, I would like to reflect on a small point that Herrnstein-Smith made that I felt was particularly insightful:. Moreover, the subject's experiences of an entity are not discrete, or strictly speaking, successive, because recollection and anticipation always overlay perception, and the units of what we call 'experience' themselves vary and overlap. I have wondered before about my own perceptive abilities. I am asked a...

Monday, April 14, 2008. The Art of Appreciation. Based solely upon the work itself, the unity, the literary devices, the elements that can be evaluated using exegetical methods? Wikipedia defines the concept of formalism in art. In the following way:. I would like to dissect the question a bit. What is the aim of working to appreciating art that we do not instantly appreciate? In a way, are we attempting to adhere to societal norms? Truly rooted in understanding the inherent worth of that art? Or is that...

Papadzules: The Death of the...Person?

http://papadzules.blogspot.com/2008/05/death-of-person.html

Tuesday, May 6, 2008. The Death of the.Person? This semester in Spanish Linguistics class, we learned an important distinction between the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativity. And the vision of cognitive linguistics. Do we first have cognition, or a way of seeing and understanding the world, or do we first have language which then shapes the way that we see and understand the world? I find it difficult to embrace Barthes' radical ideas about the death of the author given my situated-ness in a...

the literary critter: The need to read

http://theliterarycritter.blogspot.com/2008/04/need-to-read.html

Friday, April 25, 2008. The need to read. We've talked so much in class about the questions what is literature? And what is reading? While it seems worthwhile for readers and writers to consider the success of increasingly canonical ethnic and women writers, are the ideas and successes limited to the sub-culture of readers? Can they affect society as a whole? I read an article by Andrew Solomon called " The Closing of the American Book. We need to teach people not only how,. But also why to read. What li...

http://neverceasefromexploration.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Bits and Bobs. flotsam of an hours thinking. Browsing my classmates' blogs was a helpful step in arriving at this conclusion. Thank you. :]. So what did I read today? Wimsatt and Beardsley. I loved their direct, no-nonsense approach to correcting what they see as significant errors in approaches to literary criticism. And besides that, they make sense! It really does seem silly to blur the realms of meaning and effectiveness. Some particularly lucid statements I enjoyed include:. A few pages later, anoth...

The Theory Song of E. Lynn Powell: April 2008

http://emilylynnpowell.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

The Theory Song of E. Lynn Powell. April 30, 2008. How do I even begin to criticize a paper written by the professor? That would be like walking on thin ice.I truly want to do well in this class and not fall through into the freezing water of a "C" on my transcript. Yikes! But as I read the essay, typically looking for things I could disagree with, I found that my points of rebuttal were assuaged as I read more and more. Powers, you covered it all! Is it just for the classroom? Frankly, I think this is t...

http://caitlincaldwell.blogspot.com/2008/03/i.html

Welcome to my brain. A juicy wonderful look into the world of literary criticism. Are You an Intentional Fallacy? Is the thought what really. OK, let's say you are a female (not to be sexist or anything, but this is purely hypothetical). You hear a knock on the door, and when you open the door, your boyfriend is standing there, beaming. You let him in, wondering what he's smiling about. I thought about buying you flowers today. Isn't that great? He says, still smiling. Would this make you happy? Well, yo...
