A Word in Season

A Word in Season. Friday, 15 July 2011. The Gifts You Sent. Good times in the kitchen during afterschools club. Well, today is the final day for my year of raising support, and I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. When I received my last fundraising report, it not only showed that I had met the fundraising goal for the year—my supporters had given over and above the required amount. There is no way that I can thank you enough for everything you have done for me this year. The day of the 2011 ...

A Word in Season: December 2010

http://www.allisoninbelfast.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

A Word in Season. Sunday, 26 December 2010. Christmas comes every time we see. God in other persons. The human and the holy meet in Bethlehem. Or in Belfast, Baghdad or Boston,. For Christmas comes like a golden storm on its. Way to Jerusalem—. Determinedly, inevitably…. Even now it comes. In the face of hatred and warring—. No atrocity too terrible to stop it,. No Herod strong enough. No hurt deep enough,. No curse shocking enough,. No disaster shattering enough. For someone on earth will see the star,.

A Word in Season. Friday, 29 October 2010. A couple miles from my house sits Stormont, the home of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Although Great Britain retains certain governmental powers (such as taxation and foreign policy), Northern Ireland manages issues such as health, education, and agriculture. Stormont, built in 1932, is the place where the Northern Irish government gathers to make its decisions. Every morning, the bus takes me past the Stormont estate. Looking down from Stormont. But then someo...

A Word in Season: A Triumph

http://www.allisoninbelfast.blogspot.com/2011/07/triumph.html

A Word in Season. Friday, 15 July 2011. Well, here it comes again: Allison’s odd jumble of blog posts. This whole blog-writing thing seems to come in spurts for me—and, let’s face it, they could definitely be more regular. However, I sometimes like to think that I take the Dr. Who approach to blogging: always random and often unexpected. You never know when I’m going to show up to take you on a spontaneous journey through time and space. Today, I want to take you back to May. Yes, my friends, I was there.

A Word in Season: November 2010

http://www.allisoninbelfast.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

A Word in Season. Monday, 8 November 2010. There are a few things in life that you can absolutely depend upon—and I’m not thinking right now about family, good friends, or the grace of God. I’m talking about those little plot twists in life that take you by surprise and frustrate you beyond belief—until you realize that they’re not plot twists at all. They’re actually the predictable parts of my life’s storyline. If I forget my umbrella, the clouds will darken and the floodgates will open. I’m assu...

A Word in Season: Prosit Neujahr

http://www.allisoninbelfast.blogspot.com/2011/02/prosit-neujahr.html

A Word in Season. Monday, 14 February 2011. Right after Christmas, we the members of Team USA had a week off, so we decided to do some traveling. Jo, John, and Edward took on Brussels, Bruges, and Amsterdam; Adrienne stayed local; and Miriam and I went to Germany. It’s an interesting choice, I suppose, since neither of us speak German, but fortunately, we had a good friend who was willing to help us out. She shared her home with us and showed us where she works. Thank you for an incredible trip.

Teaching in Guate: Thankful and Busy

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2011/11/thankful-and-busy.html

Happy Thanksgiving to you, long-suffering readers of my blog. I'm not sure this webpage has really deserved the title of "blog" as it is more like a monthly periodical, one which you have ceased to pay for and now use for decoupage or something like that. On the weekends, Heather and I try to see as much as we can and enjoy the company of our new friends. Here is a picture of us with Andrea at her flamenco dancing recital. Flamenco is such an interesting dance. Some routines are choreographed, but th...

Teaching in Guate: October 2011

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

I'm sorry for my sporadic blogging. There is so much to tell you; life here hasn't stopped. Instead of trying to catch you up on every detail, I've decided to include some mysterious curios of Guate. Exhibit B: Softball hat. Exhibit C: Pan flute classics. Heather and I took a wonderful trip to Antigua this weekend. Another update to follow. Happy Fall, everyone. I found out two things the other day: my students listen sometimes and my students don't know what clothes are. Since then, my map has fallen of...

Teaching in Guate: September 2011

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

I'd Rather Have a Snow Day. I've never had school canceled for anything but snow. The seemingly harmless flakes were so inviting as I watched the morning news, waiting impatiently for my school to crawl across the screen with the words: "CANCELED" or "2 HOUR DELAY" close behind. Ah, snow days. Here in Guate, we have earthquake days. I was on lunch duty today when I felt the first earthquake. It wasn't huge, but it was substantial enough to cause quite a stir amongst the students. Terremotos. In other new...

Teaching in Guate: August 2011

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Everyone just needs a shuco. It's nice to be done with our first week of work. We've been lesson planning from 8-4 every day and I'm about ready to put away The World and Its Cultures. In Spanish, however, is not fun. We've been told: "oh, don't walk at night. It's very dangerous. And never walk alone. Or jog. Or go to any zone except 14. And even then, don't wear nice clothes, or jewelry, or talk on your cell phone, or have blonde hair, or look American." Nice. I think I said "que rico! It was wonderful...

Teaching in Guate: Horatio Spafford

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2011/09/horatio-spafford.html

I was very encouraged by the hymn "It is Well" tonight at church. And subsequently inspired to share with you the story of its author, Horatio Spafford. Check out his story here: http:/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio Spafford. It has been a difficult transition, with misunderstandings at work and feeling limited by the precarious situation in Guatemala. I often wonder (as most of us do) what God's plan is for me here. Regardless, it is well:). September 11, 2011 at 10:08 PM. September 12, 2011 at 10:28 AM.

Teaching in Guate: Catching Up

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2012/02/catching-up.html

I have a list of "things to blog about" on my desktop that I've been keeping since October. It's since gotten out of control. I have things written on there like "awkward car ride music" and "Livingston adventure" and "my life is like a Super Mario game" but I just haven't made the time. Here is another fledgling attempt to salvage this blog:. Although we were supposed to form a human chain from the top of the volcano to the base, what actually transpired was a rag-taggle mess of Chapins and gringos bump...

Teaching in Guate: John 15:12-15

http://jennyinguate.blogspot.com/2012/02/john-1512-15.html

Happy Valentine's Day. I'm thinking of all my friends and family today, whom I love so dearly. You have all shown me, in different ways, what it means to love selflessly and to be a true friend. I think Heather and C.S. Lewis can be credited with some important truths for today:. Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival."- C.S. Lewis. February 14, 2012 at 2:36 PM. I love you too Jenny. :). A Word in Season.

The walk in asheville. A year long adventure with a truck named pete. Withdrawn: a YAVA update. November 26, 2016. Austin Adventures

Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Well, my friends, this is the end of Austin Adventures. What a ride I have been on these last two years in Texas. I have been challenged by crazy work and school schedules, and beyond blessed with the opportunities I have had and the people I have met. Now, with a Master’s degree and two years of experience with Texas Athletics in hand, I have made my way back to Iowa to begin my next chapter! These two heroes made their way to Texas with about 48 hours notice! And drumroll please&...

Life down under studying in Melbourne Australia. Exchange ruins school and life. 2 months through the semester and I literally can’t handle any of it. There is so many things I used to like that I am realizing I don’t like anymore and so many things I wish I could do/ had done differently in my life. For starters I wish I wasn’t in London….
