Allotment 28a

Digging in the earth and growing some veg! Friday, 23 July 2010. I may not have written anything recently but I think I have a good excuse. Yes, these two have been keeping me pretty busy at home! I've had them for a week and they are so brilliant, hours and hours of fun. Their names are Boris and Poppet, brother and sister, they were born to a stray at a vets just across the road from the allotment. I heart them. I also have some parsnip seedlings! I made a soft fruit tart with the red currants, some ra...

Allotment 28a: June 2009

http://www.allotment28a.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Digging in the earth and growing some veg! Monday, 22 June 2009. I adore sweetpeas, they're my favourite flower and they remind me of my dad as he always grew them when I was young. I bought some seed at last year's Chelsea Flower show, the important things were the colour and the scent. They had to smell like proper old-school sweetpeas. And they certainly delivered on both fronts! What's been chewing on our broad beans? Something has been having a go at our broad beans! It all seems good. But a lot...

Allotment 28a: Shaping up

http://www.allotment28a.blogspot.com/2010/03/shaping-up.html

Digging in the earth and growing some veg! Monday, 29 March 2010. The old compost heap is no longer! I managed to get another bed of spuds in, this time it was Lady Balfour which are second earlies. My King Edwards are still chitting, and I got my first earlies in about 2 weeks ago. I'm not that keen on all the digging required for getting potatoes in the ground. Its damn hard work. Digging in the earth and growing some veg! Monday, 14 June 2010. Its all gone mad. Haven't written anything in about 5 weeks, bad me. In that time the allotment has gone nuts.I went away for 2 weeks to China, came back and it was like an overgrown jungle. Amazing what some sun, heat and rain can do! Here's a sort of before and after picture, the first picture is from mid May and the second from yesterday:. One of my prouder moments this year has definitely been CARROTS! James built a new bed yesterday, i...

Allotment 29 | My Allotment

Making the raised beds. First 2 raised beds competed. The soil is very stony so now that I have the first raised beds in place I’m digging them over and removing the stones as well as any clumps of weeds I’m finding. I then raked the soil level and was able to remove more stones. Once I was happy with the level and condition of the soil I added compost, chicken feed and fertilizer, then forked it over and left it a few days before planting.
