성신여자대학교 식물분자계통학실에서는 고전적 형태분류와 함께 molecular genetics, developmental biology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics 등에서 파생된 생물학의 첨단 기법들을 이용하여 피자식물 각 분류군의 또는 피자식물 전체에 대한 계통과 진화에 대한 이해를 추구하고 있다. 특히 다아윈이 말한 abominable mystery 라고 불리는 피자식물의 폭발적 진화에 대한 분자 유전학적, 유전체학적 해석과 증거들을 찾아내는 것을 주된 목표로 한다. 현재 성신여자대학교 식물분자계통학실에서 실제 이루어지고 있는 연구 주제들은 다음과 같다. 1) 한국산 꿀풀과(Labiatae)와 사초과(Cyperaceae) 식물의 형태 및 계통학적 연구와 DNA barcoding. 형태적 정리가 미흡한 국내 꿀풀과와 사초과 식물에 대한 고전분류학적 접근 및 이를 분자적으로 명확히 동정하기 위한 DNA barcoding system 구축.
