During the C 19th the demand for men to work in the copper mining and ship building industries was far greater than the area around Amlwch could provide. Workers came from other areas of Britain to fill the need. Many of these workers came from areas with a tradition of mining such as Caernarvonshire , Derbyshire , Glamorgan and Cornwall. Many of these workers brought family who settled and stayed in Amlwch. Link to Amlwch data.

Before the discovery of copper on the mountain, Amlwch was a small creek of only a few hundred people. By 1800 over 2000 miners were working on the mountain. This influx of people resulted in the need for many more services for people who were now living in the area. Traders opened shops while breweries and pubs provided entertainment for the workers.

The history of copper mining at parys mountain goes back as far as the bronze age. However copper mining on a large scale was restarted around 1768 with the discovery of a rich seam of copper ore in an area which became known as the Golden Venture. Over the next few years the mining activity on the mountain expanded and eventually came under the control of Thomas Williams (shown above) who developed new markets for the copper. Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust Ymddiriedolaeth Ddiwydiannol Amlwch. Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust. The AIHT is a local charity which has been set up to record and conserve the industrial heritage of the area. The Trust has established a visitor centre at Amlwch Port which displays information and artefacts from the area. They are currently applying for National Lottery Grants to further conserve and develop the industrial areas of Parys mountain and Amlwch port under the brand name of :-.

Like many areas of the UK Amlwchs manufacturing industry has suffered during the last few years. New roads have brought the world closer but the raising costs of materials and energy have off set these costs. Some industries were / are located in Amlwch because of its position close to deep sea water. Others were attracted by government grants to new industrial parks around the town.
