Coffee and Tea: January 2015
http://coffeeandteafamily.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 29, 2015. As many people know, one of the biggest societal measures of whether a white parent is really doing a "good job" raising a black (or mixed) child is hair. I'm not saying this is the right. But I don't control the outside world. And for the outside world, I know, hair is Important. Did any of you see that scene in Orange is the New Black where Suzanne/Crazy Eyes is at the hospital meeting her new baby sister, and the nurse does her hair? I think Bean looks beautiful. I've g...

Coffee and Tea: Why Are All These People Black?
http://coffeeandteafamily.blogspot.com/2015/08/why-are-all-these-people-black.html
Monday, August 10, 2015. Why Are All These People Black? A couple of weeks ago, Monkey asked me why all of the bus drivers at his camp were black. I didn't really know how answer him in an age-appropriate way, so I kind of deflected the question. But it bothered me that I didn't have an answer. I was a bit let down, but I figured I'd let him process the information in bits and pieces. By following his lead, I can explain things as he's ready. At least it was a good start. Is the time he's starting to not...

Something Remarkable: A List From the Brighter Side
http://something-remarkable.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-list-from-brighter-side.html
Tuesday, August 4, 2015. A List From the Brighter Side. My mama is doing very well. Chemo is not in her future, just radiation. And her surgeon, much like my OB, is very happy with his handiwork. My baby nephew is doing well. His parents have very different ideas than I do about what you do when you have a 3-week-old-fresh-from-the-NICU but more power to them for not being afraid of the world, or at least not showing it. I submitted my book proposal (lit crit thing that I wanted finished. I'm a single mo...

Something Remarkable: Minus One
http://something-remarkable.blogspot.com/2015/07/minus-one.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. LG has been at camp since Sunday (she comes home Saturday morning), and while I miss her (of course I miss her), it's been LOVELY. When she is around there is a lot of nagging- of the "put your plate in the dishwasher" variety- on my end and a lot of recalcitrance on hers. Tiny Boy and I don't have that relationship. I'm spending "quality time" with Tiny Boy. We picked blueberries together. We've watched a chunk of Toy Story. I don't actually cook when LG's not around, because T...

Something Remarkable: May 2015
http://something-remarkable.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 28, 2015. Update at the End of May. Well, where was I? I've been writing steadily since the semester ended. Working on a new project and finishing (really finishing) the book I wanted to have finished before Tiny Boy was born (ha! I've also been asked to do a bunch of shorter things (essays, reviews). I completed one, said no to one, said I'd do another on an alternate time frame. I have an upcoming workshop thing I need to prepare for. I've been reading. Ian McEwan's The Children Act.

The Building of a Christmas Cake. All the Sun For You. A mom, two boys, a husband, and a whole lot of adventure! November 14, 2016. Daddy, what’s the difference between a Republican and a Democrat? My dad’s answer stuck with me until I was in college:. Well, Court, Republicans make people work for their money. Democrats give money away.”. From that day forward, I was a Republican. But how could I understand her? I was a carbon copy of my parents. I said things like, “I fully trust our government,&#...

Pigeonholed? – Two Adults, One Child
http://twoadultsonechild.com/pigeonholed
Two Adults, One Child. Family, food, fitness, fun, and frugality. Since I last spoke of my career ambitions, and my courageous first steps towards meeting my goals. That’s good, right? And the first job I applied for? The one that is radically different from the job I am currently doing, but is located at the hospital where I am currently employed? Assign to a particular category or class, especially in a manner that is too rigid or exclusive. To put aside and ignore; shelve. Spoiler alert- the answer is...
