Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Nicholas Everitt's Argument from Scale (Part 2). In a previous post. We examined - and found wanting - premise (4) of Nicholas Everitt's argument from scale. In this argument, Everitt attempts to demonstrate the non-existence of God based on the size of the universe. By way of review, the argument runs as follows:. If the God of traditional theism exists, then God created humans to be the most important thing in the universe. The universe does not display a human scale. The fact ...

Cultivating Phronesis: Teaching struggles

The on-going effort of learning to do the right thing at the right time in the right way. Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Well, we're now at the end of a semester and, as usual, I feel like I've done a less that great job in all of my classes. I wonder if I'm in the minority by spending the last 3 weeks or so of classes berating myself for all the things I didn't do, should have done or did poorly. In an attempt to not merely. A) Because I use primary texts, the reading is very difficult. In an ideal world, ...

Undergraduate Philosophy @ Macquarie. Ethics at the BBC. November 4, 2008. I was just having a browse of the BBC’s iView content via Totem. And was surprised to see that they classify their Ethics section together with Religion. The particular heading reads “Religion and Ethics”. I wonder how many people in secular countries still equate ethics (or morality) with religion. Those Young Liberals Are At It Again. October 24, 2008. I got wind of this from an article published, surprisingly, in The Australian.

Cultivating Phronesis: On-line Class

The on-going effort of learning to do the right thing at the right time in the right way. Tuesday, July 10, 2012. Well, I'm moving into the last week of my 6 week on-line class and since I have absolutely nothing besides face-to-face classes to compare it to, I think. It's not gone horribly. In terms of them not being able to write, the frequent response I get from my comment of "I'm not following what you're saying here" is "I think what I was trying to say is." What's interesting is that students d...

Cultivating Phronesis: Fun times
http://cultivatingphronesis.blogspot.com/2011/09/fun-times.html
The on-going effort of learning to do the right thing at the right time in the right way. Thursday, September 15, 2011. I realized, as I was closing in on the last day of discussing Gorgias. In my Ethics class, that students were not quite as excited about this text as I am. Okay, that's an understatement. I suspected that they were lost and dazed and realized that this is not an ideal spot for students to be. So, I decided to go with the following in class. I told them that some. They were factually cor...
