Into the wild blue yonder…. It’s been about a year since I’ve been out here. A year ago,. I did not think I would be on the ground in Afghanistan within a year. I did not think I could see past the next few days, much less week, much less month. I did hope and pray for the best, despite the circumstances. Into the wild blue yonder…. 8220;Dual hatted” is the term to describe military commanders in joint assignments in charge of two separate chains of command. I think I’m quad-hatting right now. Deputy Detachment Commander. Chief of Operations. Battle Captain. Chief of Mission Planning Cell. All with a minimum crew. Into the wild blue yonder…. The whirlwind of the past few weeks have started to settle down. I’ve settled into a rhythm: work, workout, eat, sleep, repeat. Now we’re getting ready to close up shop and move the rest of the operations center to the ground in Afghanistan. YetI realize I miss the sleep deprived whirlwind. Into the wild blue yonder…. Military training is renown for the self discipline it instills. Supposedly to maintain calm in the heat of battle or forced endurance of the hardships of combat. The Normandy landing scene in Band of Brothers does a pretty good job depicting the kind of environment we’re training for. I think it’s more so you can force yourself to sleep the 4 hrs before a 15 hr long mission over Afghanistan when a years worth of nightmares tries to keep you up. Laquo; Previous Post.
