Complexity vs Quality - Open Source Computing and GIS in the UK
http://www.archaeogeek.com/blog/2014/04/13/complexity-vs-quality
Open Source Computing and GIS in the UK. Travels in a digital world. So, I ask some questions of colleagues, and while waiting for them to get back to me, I try some work-arounds for the SMCT. Needless to say, they don’t work either. As I said earlier, this is not a post excoriating PDG, it’s a reflection on the virtues of simplicity, good documentation, and being honest and open. Reflection Two: Why hide documentation behind what’s effectively a pay-wall? In my opinion, these points have nothing to do w...

Open Source Computing and GIS in the UK. Travels in a digital world. It’s taken slightly longer than I’d like, but I’ve updated Portable GIS to include QGIS 2.2. You can find a copy of this new version on the portable gis page. Also note that this is my first move away from using Dropbox as my file hosting service. Please bear with me if there are any problems with the link! Reflection One: The whole process of installing the PDG and discovering the various methods of doing the Thing was needlessly over-...
It's all about the language - Open Source Computing and GIS in the UK

Open Source Computing and GIS in the UK. Travels in a digital world. It's All About the Language. Comparing open source and proprietary is no longer about comparing apples and oranges- it’s about comparing apples with different labels on the side, and the language we use to make these comparisons should reflect that. Try it, it’s not as dodgy as you think! It’s still very costly to learn how to use open source software. But what about the support? Laquo; Getting into GitHub. Portable GIS v4 ».

Open Source Computing and GIS in the UK. Travels in a digital world. Archaeology, APIs and Accessibility. At the end of November (yes, I know it’s a while ago, life got in the way) I was involved in an event called #HackLancaster, part of a wider project in my home town to try and raise interest in the heritage of the old city area beyondthecastle. Various scripts for converting access databases to postgresql- collected and tinkered with here. For dumping csv to postgresql with the bare minimum of effort.

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. Reading Between the Lines. June 8, 2010 – 12:37 pm. For a very long time indeed I’ve meaning to post about a little hobby I have, toying around with Ptolemy’s. Somehow or other I never quite managed to pin down enough time to marshall my thoughts together. Finally I took the plunge and threw in an abstract for the DigiClas Work in Progress Seminar. And you can see and hear the results here. Ptolemy’s World map (Nicholas Germanus, 1482). Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. September 2, 2008 – 2:35 pm. A couple of things came down the RSS pipe today that seemed well worth a comment. The first, courtesy of Lisa Spiro. Is a nice piece of research which perfectly illustrates the point I made in the Athens Paper. New Media sources (in this case, Wikipedia) look set to increasingly compete with traditional ones. Even in academia. Why and what this might mean for the future are things she discusses in a thoughtful and interesting post.

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. Without a federal UK, a reluctant ‘Yes’. September 17, 2014 – 10:36 pm. I’m of English parentage, went to an RAF Primary School. Studied at an English University. In England for most of my adult life, all of which could play to a natural ‘no’ vote. On the other hand, I was raised in an SNP heartland. Have always felt more comfortable around the Saltire. Than the Union Flag. And support Celtic FC. And an indomitable but last-minute Gordon Brown. The question of whe...
