Computing, GIS and Archaeology in the UK. Blogging about using modern tech to dig up ancient remains. Minor triumphs, Major Hassles. Posted October 20, 2006. For a long time I’ve wanted to sort this out, pull everything into one place, display the site locations on a web-based GIS and so on. This is not rocket science, but the data had ended up in such a bad state that I couldn’t see past fixing that before getting to the good and fun stuff. Attempts a few years ago to use Mapserver. Computing, GIS and Archaeology in the UK. Blogging about using modern tech to dig up ancient remains. Cool Examples of Neogeography. Posted September 20, 2006. Back from Switzerland after the FOSS4G conference, and a weekend in Geneva. Whew! I came across some great examples of what we perhaps have to call Neogeography today- from the beautiful and a little scary Information Aesthetics. They are all examples of using maps to display statistical information, and prove what all Geomatics-types know, which ...

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. Reading Between the Lines. June 8, 2010 – 12:37 pm. For a very long time indeed I’ve meaning to post about a little hobby I have, toying around with Ptolemy’s. Somehow or other I never quite managed to pin down enough time to marshall my thoughts together. Finally I took the plunge and threw in an abstract for the DigiClas Work in Progress Seminar. And you can see and hear the results here. Ptolemy’s World map (Nicholas Germanus, 1482). Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. November 11, 2008 – 1:11 am. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend a few good congregations recently and something of a running theme has cajoled me once again into the blogosphere. The first was ‘ Digital Heritage in the New Knowledge Environment: Shared Spaces and Open Paths to Cultural Content. 8216; hosted by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Following that, I managed to make half of the TEI. Of course, we are all a mixture of both these tendencies, but dependi...

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. September 2, 2008 – 2:35 pm. A couple of things came down the RSS pipe today that seemed well worth a comment. The first, courtesy of Lisa Spiro. Is a nice piece of research which perfectly illustrates the point I made in the Athens Paper. New Media sources (in this case, Wikipedia) look set to increasingly compete with traditional ones. Even in academia. Why and what this might mean for the future are things she discusses in a thoughtful and interesting post.

Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. January 28, 2007 – 11:12 pm. After a bout of blogging lethargy I’ve been prompted by my friend and colleague Jo Cook to write something sensible, and perhaps even topical, after she was kind enough to link here in her blog. She’s actually done an excellent job of summarizing specific papers. 8211; which leaves me free to ruminate at arbitrary length on a few other things. The main things I picked up were. Travels on the Convex Hull of Normality. Portus of No Return. September 20, 2008 – 6:58 pm. Ah if only it were true and I could spend the rest of my days idling amongst the pines of Lazio. A trowel in one hand and a sizable glass of Falesco. In the other. Still, at least I get my annual jaunt to frolic amongst the spectacular ruins of Rome’s imperial harbour. Next week. Whilst I’m there I may even try and blog a little on the official project website. Meanwhile, check out the flickr stream. Build a websi...
