Dominica

Follow Linda and Bob as they sail from Boston to the Caribbean on their Tartan 4000, Argon, for a one year sailing excursion. Most mornings commence in a similar pattern. awake with only the morning sun through the hatch as an alarm, prepare a pot of deep brown coffee with the french press (no electric coffee maker available, of course), relax in the cockpit sipping the dark brew and take in the surroundings. Captain Linda Perry Riera. Dominica - The Most Unspoiled of the Caribbean Islands. Plenty of hea...
Ocean Passage: Bermuda to Antigua

Follow Linda and Bob as they sail from Boston to the Caribbean on their Tartan 4000, Argon, for a one year sailing excursion. Ocean Passage: Bermuda to Antigua. The trip south from Bermuda to the Caribbean (Antigua) is much longer. 40% longer. Many people will say that it's usually easier and safer too. There is no gulf stream to deal with and once you get down into the trades, things are usually pretty stable. Still, it's 950 freakin' nautical miles! What's the worst that could happen? On both of these ...

Follow Linda and Bob as they sail from Boston to the Caribbean on their Tartan 4000, Argon, for a one year sailing excursion. Our first Caribbean land fall back in November at the end of a six day off shore passage from Bermuda. After a joyful week recharging on this partially mountainous island we ventured south to explore the islands of Dominica. Les Saintes, and Guadeloupe only to return to Antigua a couple weeks ago for a longer stay. I could get used to this island, or perhaps I already have. Snorke...

Follow Linda and Bob as they sail from Boston to the Caribbean on their Tartan 4000, Argon, for a one year sailing excursion. Sailboat Spring Chores: Aftermath. Previously, on Argon Voyages. We took Argon to Stanley's boat yard in Barrington, RI for some major work on her mast and other systems. Along the way, we found some unexpected damage to the hoisting hardware on the mast. Damage to both headsail sheaves due to luff length of sails being too long. Tartan and Hall Spars came through. Tartan has sinc...

After the off shore leg from Block Island to the southern tip of New Jersey. Captain Linda Perry Riera. A couple of the many Victorian buildings that line the main streets of Cape May all leading to the vast beaches that curve around this southern peninsula of New Jersey. Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Last minute thoughts and preparations.
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2014/08/last-minute-thoughts-and-preparations.html
Friday, August 1, 2014. Last minute thoughts and preparations. I am really going to miss exploring Boston by dinghy. It forces you to really look around. And appreciate what's around you. Last West Marine visit ($160 for what Dan holds.grrr). Last minute packing. It goes on and on. We have been asked what we will miss the most. Dan reports (in this order). Style Cafe breakfast sandwiches. An unlimited water supply. (No, we do not have a salt water faucet or water purifier). New England in the fall. Norva...

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Harebrained Ideas
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2014/11/harebrained-ideas.html
Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Last sunset in U.S. waters for a while. As we prepare to cross the Gulf Stream TOMORROW and leave the U.S. for the Bahamas we want to take a moment to recap on what brought us here, and try to motivate you to join us. Just a little more than 4 years ago, Dan was standing on a Cape Cod beach watching sail boats ease by. In a grand moment of clarity he decided he wanted to learn how to sail. Things quickly evolved into “I want to live on a sailboat.”. One night, deep into wint...

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: The Diesel Heater
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-diesel-heater.html
Monday, April 21, 2014. This thing can crank out some heat, sometimes I just sit there mesmorized, watching it turn vaporized diesel into a blue flame as Allyson asks me how my other 'girlfriend' is doing. With this and the electric space heater going the boat can reach a comfortable 70 degrees. Force 10 Cozy Cabin Kerosene Heater. Kerosene Burner (Optimus 207b or a Hipolito burner) - Still kickin. April 23, 2014 at 12:02 AM. April 23, 2014 at 10:22 PM. Your heater is sweet! Julie and the Baer Necessities.

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Adventures in the Domincan Republic
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2015/03/adventures-in-domincan-republic.html
Monday, March 9, 2015. Adventures in the Domincan Republic. Oh Man, Almost four weeks without a new post? Well We have been keeping busy in Luperon, Dominican Republic for nearly 5 weeks now. FIVE. Longest we have stayed in one place since casting off our docking lines. When we first arrived in Luperon we were very excited to be in a place we could safely leave the boat and explore the country. This place fits the bill. Natural hurricane hole and a tremendous community of boaters and locals. After those ...

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: So eine Scheisse
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2014/07/so-eine-scheisse.html
Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Holding Tank Break Dancing. One of the only artsy SHURflo macerator pump pictures ever. Scheisse can be directed to the macerator via a y-valve. Eat your heart out super mario bros! It took one day to do the electrical and another day to do the plumbing. It was kind of a smelly task with 90 degree heat outside. Although not a very pleasant project, it was a piece of cake compared to the windvane installation. More on that next time. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Virgin Islands, the view from Ixion
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2015/06/virgin-islands-view-from-ixion.html
Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Virgin Islands, the view from Ixion. During our couple weeks sailing with Ixion they took some pics of us and Sarah in full cruising mode. Looks very glamorous from a different of view. Sometimes we were so caught up in the weather, boat maintenance, finding water and groceries you forget how lucky you are to be exploring the Caribbean. Buck Island snorkeling with Bela on the lookout for sharks. Shark detail at Christmas Cove. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Final Dinghy Adventure
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2015/06/final-dinghy-adventure.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. To keep with tradition, Bela and Dan decided to do their last dinghy adventure at high noon in the tropics. After 2,000 miles of sailing, a 1 mile dinghy ride and a 2 mile hike up an unshaded blistering road they finally reached the eastern most point of the United States. Mission Accomplished! The start of the walk brought us by one of the SETI radio antennas. "ET phone St. Croix.". Point Udall off in the distance (further than I thought). Looking west over St. Croix. Respirators...

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Respirators and the triangle of misery
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2014/06/respirators-and-triangle-of-misery.html
Sunday, June 8, 2014. Respirators and the triangle of misery. This picture basically sums up the last 4 weeks of our life; Put on respirator, crawl into small space, recite expletives, rinse, repeat. Shortly after this shot, Allyson was laying on her back in the anchor locker yelling "you're dead to me Neilan! Prepping for the bowsprit installation. Painted it with some barrier coat I had leftover from bottom painting. It won't stay white for long . Allyson spent hours, sanding, cleaning and varnishing t...

Sea Changes Sailing with Dan and Allyson: Buck Island #2
http://seachangessailing.blogspot.com/2015/06/buck-island-2.html
Wednesday, June 24, 2015. The national park service is trying to remove all invasive species and foliage off Buck island and return it to it's natural sate. They reintroduced the St. Croix ground lizard to the island and the beach is a frequented turtle nesting area. That said, there are no dogs allowed. Not to pleased with the rules (we did sneak her to shore twice though… shhh). View of St. Croix from the hiking trail. Some interesting rock layers on the beach caused by tectonic upheaval. Solarland 65W...

Read the cruising guide and decide if you want to go to Montserrat or not" she said. So I did, and it sounded interesting enough. So our next destination after English Harbour, Antigua would be to the Southwest instead of due west to Nevis/St Kitts. It a big difference!
