Friday, 6 January 2017. Painting leaves in acrylics. Contemporary style. I have done 2 paintings of leaves in a bold contemporary style. The paintings are on canvas and are painted in acrylic. Here are the finished paintings, followed by a step by step account of how they were painted. I did the top painting first. This is on a very large canvas. This one was painted for myself, and hangs on our dining room wall. The second one was, obviously, inspired by the first one, and is for sale. My next stage was...

artycraftythings: Painting irises, step by step

http://artycraftythings.blogspot.com/2012/08/painting-irises-step-by-step.html

Wednesday, 15 August 2012. Painting irises, step by step. I have just completed a new painting of purple irises. It has lots of detail and has taken me quite awhile to paint it. I photographed the whole procedure, for this blog, and for my own interest as to how a painting changes. I will show you how I did it. The first step putting some background colours on the canvas. I used acrylic paint here. I changed my mind straight away about the background colours, as you can see! The painting is now getting a...

artycraftythings: Painting of tulips. Step by step.

http://artycraftythings.blogspot.com/2013/06/painting-of-tulips-step-by-step.html

Tuesday, 11 June 2013. Painting of tulips. Step by step. My last post showed some photos of tulips I took in my back garden. I decided to do a painting based on some of the photos as I was inspired by the shapes and the vibrant colours. Here is how I created the painting. You may want to look at the photos on my last post as well here! Initially I drew out some outlines. trying to get a good balance of shapes to fill a square canvas. Next I worked a bit. I then started to play about with the background s...

artycraftythings: Hockney exhibition, London.

http://artycraftythings.blogspot.com/2012/02/hockney-exhibition-london.html

Saturday, 18 February 2012. Hockney exhibition, London. On Thursday I went up to London to see the David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy. If you haven't seen this I would really, really recommend that you go. It is a fantastic exhibition, one of the best I have ever seen. The scale of the paintings, and the amount of them in the exhibition makes it really worthwhile. Most of the larger paintings are done over several canvases, put together. Some of these are actually huge, infact massive! I find ...

artycraftythings: Pattern, using squared paper. Part 1

http://artycraftythings.blogspot.com/2012/02/pattern-using-squared-paper-part-1.html

Monday, 13 February 2012. Pattern, using squared paper. Part 1. I have been tidying up all my art/craft things since moving in to my new studio. I am amazed at some of the old things I am finding, under piles of junk, and at the back of cupboards! One of my finds has been some pattern books I did many years ago. These are old maths books, just pages of squared paper. I filled them with patterns, using felt tipped pens. Here is one example. They all started life as this. THEY ARE JUST AS INTERESTING!

artycraftythings: Paintings inspired by Van Gogh

http://artycraftythings.blogspot.com/2012/05/paintings-inspired-by-van-gogh.html

Sunday, 13 May 2012. Paintings inspired by Van Gogh. I have always loved the loose swirly style of Van Gogh's paintings. The way he uses paint is inspirational. The brushstrokes go in all directions around the canvas. I also love the bright colours, which are I like to use in my own paintings. The next one takes Van Goghs swirly paint style to extremes. This is a painting of an iris flower. At first I just did the swirls in the background, like the previous painting, but then I decided to blur th...It is...

Rozartz Contemporary floral paintings: A painting of orchids. Step by step

http://rozartz.blogspot.com/2014/04/a-painting-of-orchids-step-by-step.html

Tuesday, 22 April 2014. A painting of orchids. Step by step. A painting of orchids, step by step. I have just completed a new painting of orchids. It is painted in acrylic paints on a wooden board support. It looks like a deep sided canvas, but is actually just wood. It was a nice surface to work on. Here is a small image of the finished painting, followed by the stages I went through to create it. I continue to play around with the shades on each flower, and darken the stems and buds. After this I really...

Rozartz Contemporary floral paintings: A painting of Canna lilies.

http://rozartz.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-painting-of-canna-lilies.html

Monday, 27 July 2015. A painting of Canna lilies. My latest painting of Canna lilies. This was based on some photographs I took of canna lilies in a park in Seville in Spain, recently. They were lovely big flowers, slightly back lit with the bright sunshine there. I started by sketching the outline of the canna lilies and then blocking in the background with green paint. I knew the background colour would change though! I also added some yellow and bright green swirls to the background. My aim is to make...

Rozartz Contemporary floral paintings: Painting a red rose in acrylic. Step by step

http://rozartz.blogspot.com/2015/07/painting-red-rose-in-acrylic-step-by.html

Wednesday, 22 July 2015. Painting a red rose in acrylic. Step by step. Roses are wonderful flowers to paint. The way the petals overlap and catch the light is fascinating! I find them quite challenging to capture the depth and solidity of the shape, as well as the delicate, almost transparent, effect of the petals against the light. I have painted a red rose. Here is how I did this painting. Now on to some paint! The colours are built up in layers. I put the darkest tones on first, as this helps show...

Rozartz Contemporary floral paintings: Painting Irises, in acrylics, step by step

http://rozartz.blogspot.com/2014/02/painting-irises-in-acrylics-step-by-step.html

Wednesday, 19 February 2014. Painting Irises, in acrylics, step by step. This is how I painted a detailed picture of irises. This article appeared first on my other blog, artycraftythings. It is one of the most popular posts, so I thought I would recreate it on here too! I will show you the finished painting first, and then take you through the stages of the painting. This may seem like a fussy way of working, but I find it effective and it enables me to build my painting up in layers,. After this I work...

http://rozartz.blogspot.com/2014/01/painting-of-tulips-step-by-step.html

Sunday, 12 January 2014. Painting of tulips. Step by step. Here is a a painting I have done with the theme of tulips. It is a bright study that looks at the interaction of shapes, as well as the negative spaces between the flowers. I have exaggerated the colours and the light and shade contrasts. This will eventually be used as a greetings card design. Here is how I created the painting. Initially I drew out some outlines. trying to get a good balance of shapes to fill a square canvas. Next I worked a bit.

Rozartz Contemporary floral paintings: A picture of an Iris, using paint and pencil crayon

http://rozartz.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-picture-of-iris-using-paint-and.html

Wednesday, 26 March 2014. A picture of an Iris, using paint and pencil crayon. I have just completed a picture of an Iris using mixed media. I used acrylic paint and pencil crayons. I used to use pencil crayons a lot but found they did not give the depth of colour I was looking for, or sharp enough contrasts. My solution has been to do an under-painting in acrylic. I use Chromacolour which is a very dense liquid paint. You can use it watered down to make a watercolour, or glazed effect too. Whatever I de...

Monday, 20 April 2015. A painting of Parrot Tulips. Step by step. My latest painting is of four parrot tulips. I have a selection of these attractive vibrant flowers growing in my back garden at the moment. However when I stared the painting they were not in bloom. So I worked from last years photos initially, but was able to take inspiration from the real things as I completed the work. Here is the finished painting. Tulips in my back garden. Here is how I did the painting! But extended it to the flower...
