@ Home with Real Food: December 2011
http://athomewithrealfood.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Home with Real Food. Here’s the secret: Buy real food. Prepare it simply. Eat it up. Real people do it. Monday, December 12, 2011. Our honeymoon was the most organized I have ever been. I read guidebooks, picked people's brains, even read classics set in Italy to decide where to visit. From afar, I booked hotels and restaurants. We traveled into town or nearby villages for dinner. And we ate them all up. 1 flat of baby artichokes, 3 lbs. 1/2 cup olive oil. 2 Tablespoons minced parsley. Peel off the tough...

Home with Real Food. Here’s the secret: Buy real food. Prepare it simply. Eat it up. Real people do it. Thursday, October 11, 2012. Cauliflower as big as your head. Once, while visiting my friend Sandra in Milwaukee, near the University of Wisconsin, we saw a restaurant advertising Burritos as Big as Your Head. As I was young, poor and a lover of greasy food, this seemed attractive at the time. Now I am not so sure. Cauliflower as big as your head, though, which is what Wegmans was selling (2 for $5!

@ Home with Real Food: Eat British

Home with Real Food. Here’s the secret: Buy real food. Prepare it simply. Eat it up. Real people do it. Wednesday, March 28, 2012. I lived in London in my teens, and don't remember much about what I ate those five years but Cadbury Creme Eggs, oh, and kebabs cut from big hanks of spitted meat from shops in Gloucester Road. This last was much to my father's dismay; he'd lecture on dangers of street food to the point where I no longer copped to my transgressions. The impetus for this State-supported revela...

Home with Real Food. Here’s the secret: Buy real food. Prepare it simply. Eat it up. Real people do it. Wednesday, April 18, 2012. I have a friend who is as addicted to hunting morels as I am. The first batch she got this spring she sauteed up when she got home and ate before her husband returned. After all, we rationalized, it was only 9 mushrooms. Hardly enough to share. And just the beginning of the season. For a mother who ranks these few morel-gathering weeks in Spring among the best of the year, th...

The Path of Adventure: First Encounter Mt Etna
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2014/04/first-encounter-mt-etna.html
The Path of Adventure. Sunday, April 27, 2014. First Encounter Mt Etna. Today seemed like a forever day of traveling! We caught a boat from Lipari to Sicily and then we had a 2 hour bus ride to Mt. Etna. We had a good lunch in a refugio near where we hiked. The temperatures are much colder here and there has been snow in the higher elevations on and off for the past couple of weeks! This is a picture of the last major lava flow from 2002! We walked entirely on volcanic ash today. But they can be found in...

The Path of Adventure: Lipari
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2014/04/lipari.html
The Path of Adventure. Saturday, April 26, 2014. Today we took the most beautiful hike on the island of Lipari. Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and in Neolithic times was one of the few trading centers for obsidian. Obsidian is a hard black volcanic glass that was prized because of it's very sharp edges. We saw a lot of it in walls and just big pieces sitting in people's yards! We ended the hike walking on a Roman built road to an ancient Roman bath! Our grown over path. The ancient Roman Ba...

The Path of Adventure: August 2012
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
The Path of Adventure. Friday, August 31, 2012. Today we visited the Basilica San Marco. I had made advanced reservations on the internet so we didn't have to stand in the LONG line. . . that was 1euro that was well spent. It was raining this morning and we were a little delayed in our entrance because they were putting up raised wooden walks because the square floods! Luckily, we were one of the first ones to enter after the walks were installed so the Basilica was relatively empty. This picture is take...

The Path of Adventure: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2014/04/mt-vesuvius-and-pompeii.html
The Path of Adventure. Thursday, April 24, 2014. Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii. Our first volcano. . .Mt Vesuvius! Mt Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe! It was made famous because of the eruption in 79AD which buried the city of Pompeii! It was a VERY busy day on the volcano today. . . many school groups and just visitors that must have taken off for Easter week! Most visitors only get to walk around half the crater, we got a special permit to walk around the whole crater! The city ...

The Path of Adventure: Smooth Travel
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2014/04/smooth-travel.html
The Path of Adventure. Sunday, April 20, 2014. We set off for our trip to Naples at 6:00am on Saturday morning! We had the bumpiest ride over to Atlanta. . .we were both almost airsick by the time we landed! We head to the train to take us into the main train station in Rome so we can catch our train to Naples. Smooth sailing or rather "train-ing" to Naples. Maybe my new calm could be a long term thing. . .we will see:-)! We are trying to figure out how he suspended like this! Mt Vesuvius in the distance.

The Path of Adventure: Vulcano
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2014/04/vulcano.html
The Path of Adventure. Saturday, April 26, 2014. Today was one of those days that I am just in state of wonder. . . who gets to sit on a volcano vent or traipse through sulfur gas coming from a huge crack in the earth or wades in a warm volcanic mud pool? The answer is ME! This a picture of the port of Lipari as we were leaving . Our boat was great and I got to stretch out on the front and enjoy the view! The ascent was steep and the path was made up of volcanic scree. Then it turned to a slippery red mud.

The Path of Adventure: Volcanoes Anyone?
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2014/04/volcanoes-anyone.html
The Path of Adventure. Friday, April 11, 2014. Remember our vacation motto "If there is no chance of mortal danger, then it is not a vacation" . . . well for this adventure we will hike four volcanoes in southern Italy! On our last hike we asked our guide which hiking trip was his absolute favorite, his immediate response was the Volcanoes of Southern Italy! So we gathered 7 of our friends and said "let's do this! We leave next Saturday and arrive in Rome on 7:30am Easter morning! View my complete profile.

The Path of Adventure. Sunday, September 9, 2012. Alpe di Siusi Plateau to St. Ulrich. I am sad to say that we have lost all the pictures of today's hike. . .I am not sure where they are but they have been deleted from the camera :-(! The hike took us through green pastures and undulating terrain. . . horses and cows scattered the landscape! We traveled through the Val Gardena , one of the most expansive alpine meadowlands in Europe! I have to say that we have experienced some AMAZING cuisine this trip!

The Path of Adventure: March 2011
http://thepathofadventure.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
The Path of Adventure. Thursday, March 10, 2011. Lost City of Petra. Match me such a marvel save in Eastern Clime. A rose-red city half as old as time". Petra is one of the great archaeological treasures of the world and as far as I can tell one of the only reasons to visit this part of Jordan. I am going to tell you that our pictures cannot do justice to the incredible rock formations and carvings. We finally got the first peak of the Treasury through this narrow crack at the end of the As-Siq. The ...

At Home with Rachel
Monday, October 19, 2009. I think this might be my very favorite dessert EVER. My mom used to make this every fall when I was little. I called her on Saturday and asked for the recipe because I wanted to try and make it myself. It was fairly easy, and very delicious. Please excuse the iphone photo. I was so excited to eat it that I didn't want to waste any time getting out my real camera. Ha! 2/3 cup pumpkin (from a can). 1 T lemon juice. 1 t baking powder. 1 cup chopped pecans. 1 cup powdered sugar.

Home with Real Food. Here’s the secret: Buy real food. Prepare it simply. Eat it up. Real people do it. Tuesday, November 6, 2012. I picked more than I needed, not knowing how the fragile vegetables would fare when the real winds picked up, and brought them in. They were younger than I might have otherwise harvested them, small, tidy leaves still succulent with youth. Our thoughts are with all who have lingering trouble from the hurricane. 4 cups torn greens (frisee, arugula, cress, mesclun). 6 cups baby...
