El Grito de Yara/The Cry of Yara and a peek into the translator's workshop: bugsybanana

El Grito de Yara/The Cry of Yara and a peek into the translator's workshop. On another forum, I received the following query from. Maybe the most striking bit of political rhetoric I have ever read is from an 1868 speech by Cuban revolutionary Carlos Manuel Céspedes known as the Cry of Yara. Ive only read translations. One of them and notes on the discrepancies. The boded phrases have also been translated great and strong and contemplated. El poder de España está caduco y carcomido. Si ...The translation...

Programming languages and their relationship styles - Radio Free Meredith

Science keeps me warm at night. Programming languages and their relationship styles. Feb 28th, 2006 at 3:47 PM. This is all the fault of a conversation with. Ruby: Your older sister is the most popular cheerleader in school, but she's kind of a slut. You think that maybe if you add more features, the boys will like you just as much. Java: You try to be loving, but you were raised by a commune of 60 nervous women who have told you that everything you do is loving, even when it isn't. Your unhelpful be...

Con-Myth: Yer Doin' It Wrong! (II) - Tales of the Blue Dolphin
http://kent-allard-jr.livejournal.com/362584.html
Tales of the Blue Dolphin. Con-Myth: Yer Doin' It Wrong! August 21st, 2012. When fantasy authors - or game masters - design pantheons they often start by choosing portfolios and then coming up with deities to fill them. So the author decides there should be a sun god, a sea god, an earth goddess, a thunder god, a love goddess, a god of war, and so on, and then come up with descriptions of each. Hephaestus is god of the forge and smith of the gods, but the Cyclopses created Zeus’s thunderbolt, the greates...

In fact I have been in Law School and have now graduated. I studied for and took the bar exam. (I don't find out until mid November if I have passed or not.). I have started doing some freelance political work for some local and some non-local campaigns. 2010-08-11 08:42 pm (UTC). 2010-08-12 03:31 am (UTC). What sort of law are you going to practice?

Higgledy Piggeldy, Joshua Kronengold. 7/7/15 02:12 pm - Dexcon 2015. Another Dexcon come and gone. This time with less stupid sleep deprivation and more late mornings, due to not wanting to put my brain on the fritz. I came down late Wednesday, somewhat against my original plans, as something came up at work I couldn't easily skip out on- but due to trains being fast, still made it to Morristown well before 9 (games start at 10), doing an Ingress mission on the way and catching up with. To them, you must...

Star Trek on Emotions - Eggs and Endorphins

Star Trek on Emotions. 6/4/15 12:08 pm - Star Trek on Emotions. I've never been a Trek fan, particularly, but that hasn't stopped me from picking up bits of it, given fannish immersion (and a Next Gen watching weekly gathering before we switched to B5). But it occurs to me that there's a set of Star Trek races that are inherently a conversation about emotion. VULCAN: I AM SUPERIOR BECAUSE I HAVE NO EMOTIONS. JUST LOGIC. ROMULAN: NO, I AM SUPERIOR BECAUSE I EMBRACE MY EMOTIONS, AND THEY EMPOWER ME. And ye...

Con-Myth: The Portfolio Cloud - Tales of the Blue Dolphin
http://kent-allard-jr.livejournal.com/371521.html
Tales of the Blue Dolphin. Con-Myth: The Portfolio Cloud. October 18th, 2013. Last year I wrote about divine "portfolios". And how they're a lousy starting-off point when you're designing a divine pantheon. I made the point that "gods can have overlapping portfolios, and the more important ones can have a grab-bag of domains with only obscure connections between them.". Recently I decided to map out some of these "obscure connections" using software called Scrapple. This diagram could also be used in an ...

Who Said It? - jpmassar

Jun 3rd, 2013 at 9:31 AM. Meritocracies may be fairer and more efficient than some alternatives. But fair in an absolute sense? Think about it. A meritocracy is a system in which the people who are the luckiest in their health and genetic endowment; luckiest in terms of family support, encouragement, and, probably, income; luckiest in their educational and career opportunities; and luckiest in so many other ways difficult to enumerate- these are the folks who reap the largest rewards. Who just said it?

Elephant and gorillas - Tom's Journal
http://yesthattom.livejournal.com/1059254.html
June 7th, 2015. I keep seeing people get these expressions wrong. Im writing them down here so I can link to them later. The elephant in the room. The uncomfortable thing that everyone knows but isnt talking about. A drunk father complains why is everything so messed up? And nobody talks about the elephant in the room. his alcoholism. Something you cant get rid of; that costs more to dispose of than to keep. Related: a white elephant sale. The 800 pound gorilla. Things that are wrong wrong wrong:. The or...
