It's like a virtual sketchbook. Friday, May 24, 2013. Art I've Seen Around Philly So Far. Which cannot really be beat if we're talking stupendous objects. A few days later, I wandered over to the Fabric Workshop and Museum and saw "Changing Scenes: Points of View in Contemporary Media Art," which I found much more satisfying. I got to experience Adrian Piper's Cornered. I'd only ever seen Piper's monologue. Installation View of Out of the Corner. To earn a pass, but like nothing every really should.

This relationship is still relatively new to me, and has brought up a lot of ideas for me concerning my own sexuality and gender expression (I am a queer-identified gender-nonconforming woman; Nick is a straight cis man). Performing this piece collaboratively speaks directly to the process of mutual transformation I have experienced in this process of getting to know and falling in love with someone while navigating these complexities.

I transformed a room using enamel paint, chicken wire, and paper in order to physically inhabit the space of my drawings. I started by rolling gray paint on the walls, then went over the shapes that remained in lighter and darker shades of gray. The paper and wire forms are three-dimensional echoes of those forms. This project continues my exploration of lipstick as a transferable and evocative medium, but with a mind toward the dynamics of a romantic relationship. For this project, my partner and I took turns transferring hot pink lip color back and forth until the surface of both of our faces had been transformed. I recorded myself kissing a pane of glass between myself and the camera (between myself and the implied viewer), so that the residual marks slowly obscure my face. I added audio of my voice reading excerpts from Anne Carson's Eros the Bittersweet . In making this piece, I considered the kiss as an emotionally and politically charged mark-making gesture, as well as the polarizing/ isolating nature of affection/ infatuation. Putting My Face On. I asked friends, colleagues and family members to record themselves applying red lipstick, then performing a mundane action of their choosing. I then collected and edited the footage they shot. Ideally, multiple synchronized loops would play on multiple monitors, but in lieu of that, I combined the footage into one loop. These videos behave in conversation with one another. They are based on actual love letters my grandmother kept hidden in a drawer of her bureau, which were only discovered after her death. For Dear Inge. I synthesized her lover's letters into one message, then recorded my own voice reading it. I combined that audio with the sound of my hand writing the words, and used photographs he'd sent in the original letters for the accompanying visual. Dear Alex. Is meant to play after Dear Inge. I found images from a 1938 dating guide for single women circulating on the Internet. I printed the images out, kissed the male and female figure in each tableau, then scanned, edited and reprinted them as photos. The titles come from the advisory text of the manual. This piece investigates archetypal gender performance/ red lipstick as a material/ the kiss as a gesture with multiple connotations. Running Part Deux
Monday, February 16, 2009. That said I am getting the miles in. Today is my long run day, 8 miles. Most of my runs have been smooth and without incident lately.
