Sal and I lounged around and enjoyed the summery evening, and the polenta was so damn good that I got right back up and grilled myself another piece, this time attempting to make it a "dessert polenta." So, in an effort to reach BOTH of our respective patriarchs at the SAME TIME, Brian and I hosted a Father's Day gathering, which was just us, our parents, and Brian's sister and brother in-law. And. It. Was. Lovely! The significantly more accomplished and knowledgeable chef and sausagephile. Normally I am very impressed with the Smitten Kitchen blog's recipes and photography, but I saw this recipe for beef chili with sour cream and cheddar biscuits and I thought, gross! Look at those carrots, they shouldn't be sliced like that! Where is the deep red chili color? This is what I imagine gruel to look like! I'm not a victorian-era orphan, why would I want to eat like Oliver Twist? Fresh ...

Above the blue pool. Wednesday, May 25, 2011. This past weekend our rowing group had coach Carlos Dinares in from Seattle to do some intensive training. And it was intensive! Here's a video of Fran and I AFTER a little work. Better on the strong finishes, I personally still need to work on getting more "bite" on the catch, as Carlos says. Whenever i've made eggplant dishes for people they usually say "i usually don't like eggplant, but I like this.
