His nephew, Dale Garden, is second from the right in the first row. Merle, in the back of photo below, went all eight of his grade school years with the same school teacher, Miss Davis, and the same classmates, Aileen Thomas and Phyllis Groet. It was extremely rare for a single school teacher to teach that many years in a one-room country schoolhouse.

https://merlevanderhorst.wordpress.com/2012/02/28/a-short-biography
Merle E. Vanderhorst: 1924 – 1944. Merle was born September 29, 1924. Only 6-7 years older than his oldest nephew and niece, he was everyone’s favorite uncle. He was always, like many of his time, “nuts” about airplanes, building numerous model airplanes. He graduated from high school in Oskaloosa in 1942. You ar...

Merle E. Vanderhorst: 1924 – 1944. Memories from Mary Ann (Garden) McBride. Uncle Merle, Mom’s youngest brother, was born September 1924, when Mom was 17. She cared for him a lot as a baby — there was a special bond between them. He was also a favorite to ten (at the time of his death) nieces and nephews. Note from Dale Garden: Although Mary Ann remembers “a small plan”, I remember it as a B-24, the same kind of plane in which he flew his later missions from Italy.). This all was very hard on Mom and she...

I remember her “fast hands” in the kitchen — her daughters had the same fast hands. Although I doubt that she thought about it, she had a remarkably sunny disposition. One priceless story about her was told ...
