Merle E. Vanderhorst: 1924 – 1944. Merle was born September 29, 1924. Only 6-7 years older than his oldest nephew and niece, he was everyone’s favorite uncle. He lived on the family farm until the late 1930s. He then moved to Bussey with his parents. Soon they moved to Oskaloosa. He attended high school and worked in a “creamery” for Ralph Van Zetten. It was built because the old house, back in the field to the southwest, burned down. Both Cousin Norma (Norma Flanders Dunn) and I remember our mothers talking about it.
