1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. In Darwin the seating was benign. My friend and I came upon the cinema, walking around by the water earlier that day. Intrigued, we peered in through the closed gates and were pleased to discover that there was a film showing that night. Birds squabbled and squawked in the surrounding trees as the light left the sky and the heat of the day softened into a balmy evening. The film was the perfect accompaniment to a first experience of Darwin. 8 Lest I Forget →.

1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. Understandably these revelations would provoke horror in any vehicle enthusiast. So I had never been to a car show and had no particular desire to do so. But there I was at the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival and stretched out around the streets the vehicles gleamed and their owners preened. Then I spotted the VW ‘beetles’ of my childhood, and I was doing it too. There’s the bug hole in which I hid at the drive-in when the evil queen in Snow White appeared.

1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. If you are heading out on safari or planning a trip to a zoo, the prospect of your eyes startling upon previously unseen creatures is fairly high. If you are not, it becomes a bit chancy. Seeing five such creatures in the wild becomes a matter of location and good fortune. So, although I knew I would be travelling to some new natural places in Australia and New Zealand it was by no means certain that I would achieve this one. Tamar wallabies (Kangaroo Island).

1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. A lot of literary classics are ‘done’ at school, dissected in essays and discussions and exams. Others are referenced in popular culture or lodged in language leaving a distinct impression that you surely must have read them at some stage. For me at least, there are many I haven’t. Crime and Punishment (Russia) Dostoyevsky. The Odyssey (Greece) Homer. Don Quixote (Spain) Cervantes. Crossing to Safety (United States) Stegner. Madame Bovary (France) Flaubert.

1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. An affection for the music of Gershwin and Cole Porter has morphed for me over the years into an interest in most things Art Deco and that period between the wars which at least from a distance seems fascinating and shocking. 1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. 8 Lest I Forget. The last Anzac Day Dawn Service I had been to, was at Gallipoli in 1990. It was my first trip overseas and knowing my paternal grandfather had fought there I detoured to the Peninsula on the way to Istanbul. It was an extraordinary experience for many reasons. Like many towns my birth place, Kurri Kurri has a war memorial in the Park. Such memorials are a reminder that statistics are formed from single lives of infinite value. For those...4 All...

1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. 5 Floating beneath Glowworms. At Waitomo Caves in the North Island of New Zealand I could have donned wet suit and signed up for the black water caving adventure promising thrills, spills and (less compelling for me) plenty of chills given the time of year. Instead I opted for the river boat/glow worm experience. Photo courtesy of Spellbound. Photo courtesy of Spellbound. 1 – 10. 11 – 20. 21 – 30. 31 – 40. 41 – 50. I’d never waved and screamed at a group arriving at an airport. I’d never had a body part signed. I’d never had a poster of a pop star on my wall. I’d never written a fan letter. I had certainly never been to a Fan Convention. More personally it was a love I shared with my maternal grandmother Ruby Pearl (Pearlie).
