Bike Buffoon

Sunday, 12 June 2011. In many ways this was just about the last thing I wanted to do on a chilly Saturday morning at 4.30am. But, like quite a few things I have done recently I have not afforded myself the luxury of too much thought and just got on and done them. I was getting up at this ridiculous hour to give myself time to drive to Shropshire, cycle 80 miles and then drive home again.in time for tea. And the reason for the far-flung destination for an 80 mile bike ride? The early part of the ride was ...

Bike Buffoon: Day 13

http://bikebuffoon.blogspot.com/2011/06/day-13.html

Friday, 3 June 2011. Met my daughter Charlotte and wife Pia for the final leg of the trip, I rolled into John O'Groats at around 4pm, after a hard day's ride of more then 90 miles. The scenery today has been the best of the trip, but the hills once I hit the coast road were brutish. And then, to cap it all, the road to. John O'Groats has closed eight miles from the end! An accident meant a diversion was in place - perfect! That was for dad I know you were with me x. The Buffoon has landed! And your Dad w...

Bike Buffoon: April 2011

http://bikebuffoon.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, 23 April 2011. I did originally say this blog was to keep anyone interested up to date with my ride preparation. Those familiar with my musings so far will quickly agree it’s done nothing of the sort. It’s become a showcase for the ramblings of a deranged person. But today that must stop for a minute as I do impart some serious news, and it’s not good. As for the practicalities of the journey, we are working on some options, but it will happen - definitely. Apologies for this somewhat sombre mi...

Bike Buffoon: March 2011

http://bikebuffoon.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, 27 March 2011. I know the way now - follow me! For the past few weeks I have been been averting my gaze whenever the weather forecasting folk show the VERY BIG map of the UK. It’s HUGE and seems to be there not to tell us about the weather but to demonstrate what a MASSIVE land mass this UK place is. Or is that just me? I’m not entirely sure yet how I’m going to get there, but I’m heading for Glastonbury where I will lay my head and dream dreams of rock greats and quagmire field...Only 65 miles t...

Bike Buffoon: Day 10

http://bikebuffoon.blogspot.com/2011/05/day-10.html

Tuesday, 31 May 2011. I'm not great at decisions first thing in the morning - tea or coffee is about my limit, and that's an easy one anyway because I never have tea. But I had to choose between the peaceful cycle path along the edge of Loch Lomand and the hurly burly of the A82 heading north. However, after 15 miles I was still upright with only minor scratches and shouting at Eddie Waring - "I'll play my joker! If you want me I'll be in the bar. Said man from Bradford, just about to be overtaken by Buf...

LEJOG Blog: September 2010

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Wednesday, 29 September 2010. Itchy feet. That's how it started. A feeling that it was about time that I got out and did something a bit more fulfilling and demanding than the odd game of 5-a-side. Something that I could look back on with a sense of achievement when I'm old and grey. This would need planning, lots of training and at least one willing. So that's how this whole thing got started. Having come across various Lejog/Jogle blogs and found them helpful and insightful training...

LEJOG Blog: September 2011

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Wednesday, 14 September 2011. It is rather sheepishly that I return to this blog, having not posted a single word since before the beginning of our trip, over two and a half months ago. I realise that there were a dedicated few who checked the blog regularly for updates throughout the two weeks of the trip, so many apologies for keeping you in the dark! I suppose I should first confirm that WE DID IT! So I've decided to let some of our photos tell the story. Day 2 - Up and over Dartmoor.

LEJOG Blog: March 2011

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Monday, 28 March 2011. My first 'back-to-back' weekend. As the more observant among you may have realised, my promise of on-the-road updates over the weekend failed to materialise. I did try, but it must have got lost somewhere in the technosphere. I'm planning on updating via my phone on the trip itself, so I'll need to iron these issues out sooner rather than later. I also get paid this week, which will enable me to purchase the rest of the kit I'll need. My only quandary is my choi...

LEJOG Blog: October 2010

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Monday, 4 October 2010. When I was researching the trip I had a few questions that seemed particularly difficult to answer, namely:. 1) What type of bike should I be using? 2) How much money should I be spending? 3) What other kit will I need? Disclaimer: Given that I'm only a month or so into this process, I'm hardly an expert. The best thing I did was to phone up a bike shop and ask the experts! But here's how I went about answering these questions. 3) What other kit will I need? Much b...

LEJOG Blog: January 2014

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Wednesday, 15 January 2014. New challenge: new blog! Time for a long-overdue update! As I alluded to in my last post, the experience of training for and then completing LEJOG rekindled my interest in mountain biking. Mountain biking was my first proper introduction to cycling of any sort, and provided me with many happy days spent building and riding trails with friends. I hope you'll join me there! Thanks again, and happy riding. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). New challenge: new blog!

The Bike / Kit. Monday, 16 May 2011. Training Weekend - Day 3: Slow and Steady. We got up on the third day of our trip feeling a little exhausted. This would be the first time I'd ridden 3 days in a row and my legs were screaming in protest after the heroics of the previous day! But we set off in decent time and stopped in Keswick for a hearty Greggs breakfast, which gave us the kick-start we needed. A photo op can be a great excuse for a break on a tough climb. Here's the stats for the day:. Ever since ...

LEJOG Blog: April 2011

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Wednesday, 27 April 2011. Ever since we agreed to do our LEJOG, the plan has always been to meet up for a long weekend's training, the idea being that it would allow us to get used to cycling together, staying in hostels, riding with panniers etc, and give us an indication of how our individual fitness levels were coming along. I'm hoping to be able to update the blog at the end of each day, so I'll try and keep you posted on our progress. Friday, 22 April 2011. Just arrived in Brodick.

LEJOG Blog: December 2010

http://lejog-blog.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

The Bike / Kit. Thursday, 30 December 2010. It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.". 1) http:/ vimeo.com/groups/6916/videos/11154268. For Christmas, and can't wait to read it. In a similar vein, I've found Mar...
