Biff's Birding

Hi, I am a young 15 year old naturalist who specializes in birds. I travel to my favourite hotspots for birdwatching. St Just in southwest cornwall and the Exe estuary being my most exciting locations. I have recently started ringing and do it in Swindon normally, I am a trainee. I will be uploading what I've seen and where. Tuesday, 4 August 2015. Rodborough Common, Gloucestershire 1st August 2015. One surprising find was a female Emperor quartering the grassland just in front of us, a bit lost I expect!

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : August 2014

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Friday, 1 August 2014. What a 'Tern' out! On the 27th of July me and my Dad headed of to the Farne Islands for the first time. We were really excited as we have always wanted to go there. At around 11:30am we arrived at our hotel in Seahouses and more or less straight away we headed of to get a boat to the Farnes. At first our boat took us around some of the Islands were we got close views of Puffins. And we managed to spot a few cracking Purple Sandpipers. Colony where we ...

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Tuesday, 23 June 2015. On Sunday we took a visit to RSPB Blacktoft Sands in hope of seeing the drake Ring Necked Duck. And also we wanted to see the Montagus harriers. Again We were hoping to get slightly better views of them. We arrived about 2ish and then we started our walk round the reserve but before that I managed to find a Robin. Nest next to the reserve which is my first one so I was very happy! A very nice bird to see! On the water. We then went to the Receptio...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : July 2014

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Tuesday, 8 July 2014. Super Suprise at Saltholme. Usually every weekend we get up early to go birding, this weekend was no different but instead of birds we were looking for bikes. We got up early to go and watch the Tour de France as it was right at the bottom of my street. After it had finished we then started to head of to RSPB Saltholme. We went there because a Black Winged Pratincole. Grey Heron, Common Terns, a Reed Warbler. And quite a few Mallards. I turned to see a...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : May 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Monday, 18 May 2015. In the last couple of weeks I have been busy with exams and revising for them so I haven't been able to get out as much as I wanted to but thankfully this weekend we managed to get out. We decided we would have a visit to Wintersett Reservoir in hope of seeing the Lesser Scaup. Which had been present for several weeks. It is fitted with a red nasal saddle on its beak where you can see that it was tagged in Portugal! So it has come quite a way! It swam r...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : January 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Saturday, 31 January 2015. Nosterfield gets a visit from America! This afternoon me and my Dad were deciding on where to go for the rest of the afternoon. We couldn't decide where until a drake American Wigeon. Turned up at Nosterfield so we were straight over. As soon as we arrived some birders put us straight onto this awesome bird, it was a little distant but through the scope it looked awesome! It stuck out like a sore thumb from the other Wigeon. Fly over our car.

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : April 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Thursday, 9 April 2015. Swillington, Spurn and a Sweet Surprise! On a nice and sunny Sunday morning we took a little trip to Swillington Ings to see what we could find. We were hoping for maybe our first Swallows. Possibly a fly over Osprey. And some nice breeding plumaged Black Necked Grebes. Throughout most of the day we kept our eyes to the sky just in case we even got a glimpse of a Swallow. But we had no luck but a 'booming' Bittern. And a Male Bullfinch. It was very f...

Some of my birding adventures! Saturday, 29 November 2014. After school on Friday my Dad took me to Spurn even though when we got there it was dark it means when we woke up the next morning we wouldn't waste any time getting there. The next morning we were told that we should go to the Sea watching hide as it is good early morning and it turned out to be great. We spent several hours in the hide. Our totals are:. 2 Red breasted Mergansers. 5 Red Throated Divers. And a Little Egret. We then went to tell t...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : March 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Sunday, 29 March 2015. In Search of Harriers and a Good Laugh. I started my half term with a very nice Friday afternoons trip over to Heslington Common in search of the Great Grey Shrike. And a few nests to start our nest record scheme off for the BTO. We had a good search of the site but unfortunately we had no luck with either but at around dusk, 2 amazing Barn Owls. They gave cracking views. It is the closest I have ever got to a Barn Owl. Around. Hen Harriers. In New Br...

Some of my favourite photography experiences. Bird Boxes For Sale. Close up with nature. End of the Nesting season. Spotted Flycatcher parent on nest incubating 4 eggs. The parents had nested on a large tower around 100m away which had failed. What was interesting is that the birds were a lot more skittish when the nest was lower in the second nesting attempt about 3m of the ground as apposed to 10m but even more when there were young chicks (1 or 2 days old). Robin eggs (From 2 metres back). Red kite - 1.

Birding beyond Sunset

Monday, December 8, 2014. Take a Break from the City. Lima (Pantanos de Villa). Including extracts from my diary for the day - 10 June 2014. Trip organised and guided by Gunnar of Kolibri Expeditions. Just after 7am we headed off from the backpackers I was staying at in Miraflores area, to Pantanos de Villa, stopping along the way at a spot along the malacon where the most obvious birds were the pelicans and gulls. The Peruvian Pelicans. Very excitedly Gunnar points out a Peruvian Seaside Cinclodes.

BIRDING BEYOND the PALE

BIRDING BEYOND the PALE. Tales from a recycled birder. Friday, 7 February 2014. Much of the following is a repeat of what has already been covered in Birds of Allen Road. And Birding the South Burnett. I did have ambitious plans for the new year; a new format, a different way of keeping any remaining public audience interested in the Biding Beyond the Pale. It hasn’t come about so far. Having the time on your hands does not necessarily equate to more time for writing. Take January 2014 as a pointer.

Birding and Mountain Biking. Keepin' the 'nocs out the spokes. Wednesday, November 15, 2017. I've been birding more, not biking so much. I did take the time to train and run a 5k though. Still feeling some positive effects from that, but I'm getting that old restless urge to exercise more again. I have, after all, finally turned forty. It use to be, I was the young guy at all the Audubon Society meetings, now I'm the old guy. I got my first sparrow at Holloway park! Lake Morton has returning ducks. I'm d...
