Birding for a Lark: Mudayy in the heat
http://birdingforalark.blogspot.com/2015/05/mudayy-in-heat.html
My Libyan list (182). Occasional birds in depth. My Saudi list (333) and targets. My Oman list (331). Thursday, 21 May 2015. Mudayy in the heat. Sunday was my first birding since getting a bad cold. I chose to make a desert trip starting before dawn. The idea was to head to Mudayy oasis looking for my target Dunn's lark. On the way, look for African collared dove. In the village and then head on to the Shisr desert farming district by a back road. Every time I have been there, chestnut-bellied sandgrouse.

My Libyan list (182). Occasional birds in depth. My Saudi list (333) and targets. My Oman list (331). Sunday, 10 May 2015. Three seasons at Hamran and Taqah. On Tuesday afternoon, I made one of my regular visits to Ayn Hamran and one of my slightly less regular visits to near-by Taqah. At Ayn Hamran there were signs of summer. The shining sunbird. Have already bred . This young bird was begging for food and I saw it fed once by a male. Very young shining sunbird. I observed three grey-headed kingfisher.
Birding for a Lark: The odd couple at Raysut
http://birdingforalark.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-odd-couple-at-raysut.html
My Libyan list (182). Occasional birds in depth. My Saudi list (333) and targets. My Oman list (331). Wednesday, 6 May 2015. The odd couple at Raysut. I have been visiting Raysut settling pools once a week and during the working week for some time now. This time I went on Monday. You can guarantee bird activity even in the heat of late afternoon because of the water. One intriguing observation is the presence still of the vagrant spur-winged lapwing. Which has been there several months. The number of wad...
Birding for a Lark: Al Ansab wetlands, Muscat
http://birdingforalark.blogspot.com/2015/05/al-ansab-wetlands-muscat.html
My Libyan list (182). Occasional birds in depth. My Saudi list (333) and targets. My Oman list (331). Monday, 11 May 2015. Al Ansab wetlands, Muscat. I visited Al Ansab wetlands for the first time on Thursday morning before my business day there. I arrived at 6.30 am and finished at about 8.00 am. My original plan was to bird through to 8.30 but it was simply too hot and humid. I had to leave at 8. Nevertheless the birding was good and I ended up with another addition to my Oman list. There are heavy res...
Birding for a Lark: Seeb, Muscat
http://birdingforalark.blogspot.com/2015/05/seeb-muscat.html
My Libyan list (182). Occasional birds in depth. My Saudi list (333) and targets. My Oman list (331). Monday, 11 May 2015. On both late Wednesday afternoon and mid afternoon on Thursday I birded straight out of my hotel, the Golden Tulip, Seeb near Muscat airport. In the first session there was a sandstorm and the second was fiercely hot. It was battle against the elements. In some senses, the second session was the better one. This was in natural scrubland. Early on I flushed a Eurasian nightjar. Nevert...

Birding Sudan: December visit to Bahri
http://birdingsudan.blogspot.com/2014/12/december-visit-to-bahri.html
A blog for anyone with an interest in the wild birds of Sudan. Tuesday, 16 December 2014. December visit to Bahri. Marwa and I were at Bahri Sewage Pools again last weekend. We caught lots of Northern Masked Weavers and Sedge Warblers, plus a few Reed Warblers and other birds. The weavers had all moulted out of breeding plumage and were in bright, fresh non-breeding plumage. A few juveniles were still in the final stages of wing and tail moult. Little Bee-eater, Bahri Sewage pools 12th December 2014.
breathing space: April 2014
http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Tuesday, April 22. The last 3 days of Holy Week is traditionally family, prayer and quiet time and even if summer classes started on Holy Monday, the long exodus to the provinces left a sizzling Metro Manila tranquil and traffic-free. The break from work afforded Adri and I a few bird encounters. Even if it was high up in the tree, I was able to take a photo of this tiny migrant. It was probably on its way back north for spring. When we arr...

http://irishbirderabroad.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html
Birding Adventures in Saudi Arabia and around the World. Blogs of some of my birding adventures in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. Tuesday, 31 May 2016. A weekend in the Nursery. This last weekend (28/5/16) I headed further south off my usual patch at Al Hayer and to say the least it was a little voyage of discovery and excitement for me. I will add another blog later on the other stuff but this lot had all the joys of love and romance, then the reality of the kids about them. Speaking of Whit...

Birding Adventures in Saudi Arabia and around the World. Blogs of some of my birding adventures in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. Sunday, 13 November 2016. Buraydah for the day. As it turned out this visit was to reinforce my belief that with birding, especially in Saudi Arabia, you should stick to your plan and not give up. Doing this brought me back to a spot I had been hours earlier and where I got a lifer;. As always the Crested Lark were out in force with about 10 to 12 seen on the day&#...

Birding Adventures in Saudi Arabia and around the World. Blogs of some of my birding adventures in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. Wednesday, 25 January 2017. Al Hayer Bridge 21-1-17. Spent morning around the bridge at Al Hayer. The plan was to spend an hour or so there and move on but as you will see I got side tracked by a nice bird. One of the many Laughing Dove about the site this morning, beautiful bird but a pain for birders.. A little more unusual are the Spectacled Bulbul. There w...

Birding Adventures in Saudi Arabia and around the World. Blogs of some of my birding adventures in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. Tuesday, 1 November 2016. AsSaad ah East of Al Kharj. The area to the east of my location looked like this for miles with vegetation disappearing as you look further east. Walking on this stuff was hard work and anyhow there were very few birds on that side of the road. . Streaked Weavers were about in small numbers on site but only in small groups of 3 or 4.
Gone Pishing: March 2014
http://gonepishing.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 2 March 2014. Today I took a trip up to Namran to bird the coastal forest near the Russian border and hopefully find some wintering woodland birds. The woods are quite extensive and at this time of year devoid of people although the well worn paths and cafes closed for winter suggested that isn't always the case. The shore and sea were almost devoid of birds except for a few LWHG's but the mixed deciduous woodlands were fairly lively. Commonest birds were great tit. And a couple of jackdaw. Hajig...

Birding Adventures in Saudi Arabia and around the World. Blogs of some of my birding adventures in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. Thursday, 12 January 2017. An early visitor to he area is this Stonechat. It was deep in the stubble of the old reed beds so focus was difficult.. I am going with green sandpiper for this one but will look again in a bit, never been particularly comfortable telling the different sandpipers apart.. I spotted about a dozen or so Crested Lark around the area they se...

Birding in Florida 2009
Birding in Florida 2009. A review of three weeks birding based in Orlando, Florida, USA from 16 February to 9 March 2009. Friday, 13 March 2009. Wonderful birds at wonderful sites. Four weeks in Florida. One week to get acclimatised, enjoy the sun and pool plus unwind after the awful weather in both Spain and the UK and then it was off to Daytona Beach. But first, what to see and where to go? Two special votes of thanks here. First to friend Andy Paterson. Our first visit was to the Emerald Marsh. Which ...

My Libyan list (182). Occasional birds in depth. My Saudi list (332) and targets. My Oman list (330). My Mauritania list (299). Saturday, 17 March 2018. Keur Macene in early spring. Having gone out birding locally last Saturday, this was followed up with a much longer trip on Sunday. It was originally planned to head to Mzela. We went there pretty much directly. On arrival we found that although some of the wetland next to the village had dried up since the New Year, most of it was intact. We made our wa...
