Birding in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and Beyond. Friday, August 14, 2015. ABA Camp Avocet 2015; Guest Blog #4. Hi birders, its Tim. Once again, I'll be sharing with you my wonderful experiences at Camp Avocet. Check out my first three posts if you haven't already. Day 4 of camp was our long looked forward to trip to Cape May. Because we were to take the ferry from Lewes to Cape May, we had a late start for birding since the departure time for the ferry was 8:45. After studying the shearwater, we h...

Birding with Ludlow: May 2014

http://www.birdingwithludlow.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Birding in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and Beyond. Friday, May 9, 2014. Ludlow Loses a Lifer. It has been over a month since my last update. Some blogger I am! I got an anonymous note from a reader urging me to a) post more often; b) incorporate video and audio; c) make it more exciting. Agreed. So, to appease the masses here is a video of one of the Louisiana Waterthrushes located during April in Estabrook Woods in Concord (an ongoing project, as their breeding status is uncertain).

Birding with Ludlow: October 2014

http://www.birdingwithludlow.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Birding in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and Beyond. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. A week from today I will be in Texas at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. As perhaps some people besides my son might be reading this, some details about the trip are in order. First, the festival itself is perhaps the mother of all birding festivals, now in its 21st year and renowned for its good organization and top-notch field trips. And the World Birding Center. Areas I will be visiting during the festival. As pr...

Birding with Ludlow: February 2014

http://www.birdingwithludlow.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Birding in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and Beyond. Monday, February 3, 2014. Ludlow Goes Big (again). Yes, our virtual birding companion, Ludlow G., is at it again. Realizing that if one year can be big, three can be bigger (and more meaningful), Ludlow will be compiling collaborative "big years" with birders in Concord during 2014 and 2015. Some early comparisons between January 2013 and 2014 suggest why long-term surveys are so useful. Wood duck, green-winged teal, bufflehead, mute swan. Neverthel...

http://www.birdingwithludlow.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Birding in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and Beyond. Tuesday, August 27, 2013. The count since 200 looks like this:. 201: a fly-over, calling dickcissel at Great Meadows. 202: American Golden Plover, still in breeding plumage (last reported on 8/26, with rumored re-sightings). 203: Little Blue Heron, juvenile, associating with Snowies. And just this morning,. 204: a hatch-year Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher. And this afternoon (8/27), much to my chagrin,. Posted by David Swain. Monday, August 12, 2013.

Great Meadows Concord: Mar 5, 2014

http://www.greatmeadowsconcord.com/2014_03_05_archive.html

Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Today was one of those cold dreary days. The type that tell you know that even though the calendar says March, winter says it's not dead yet. It was cold and grey. It looked like snow, felt like snow, and occasionally the odd snow flake flew by; but that was just a reminder of the season. The refuge was quiet. The stillness only broken by the distant drumming of woodpeckers and the occasional roar of a departing jet. Today was a day that belonged to the hunters. Having completed...

Great Meadows Concord: Mar 23, 2014

http://www.greatmeadowsconcord.com/2014_03_23_archive.html

Sunday, March 23, 2014. March came in like a lion, or maybe that was just February overstaying its welcome. At the beginning of the month my few visits we often quite brief due to combination of cold and wind. After just a little while outside, I would find myself retreating to the comfort of my car headed to the nearest Dunks to get a cup of joe to warm my insides. Later in the month conditions start to mellow. Water is flowing between the upper and lower impoundments. In the midst of the melting snow, ...

Sunday, August 3, 2014. It's All A Blur To Me. The other day I was at the refuge. The sky was cloudy. The light was meh! If there was any wildlife activity it was under the cover of the lotuses that blanket the impoundments. Frankly, it would have been a better morning to head to Dunkin Donuts than to try to take photographs. Now I've take my share of accidentally blurred and out of focus images, but would you believe it is a lot harder to do it intentionally and end up with a pleasing result. There was ...

Monday, August 5, 2013. It's Been A While. Between traveling, vacations and my summer photography project, I have hardly had a chance to make it over to Great Meadows. While I have missed it, my summer photography project has been exciting. I've been photographing loons from my kayak. I would encourage you to click on the link and take a brief detour to view some highlights from that project. Great Blue Herons flying to and fro. Flock of ducks leaving for the morning. While Great Blue Herons are common, ...

Great Meadows Concord: Apr 3, 2014

http://www.greatmeadowsconcord.com/2014_04_03_archive.html

Thursday, April 3, 2014. March At Great Meadows. March just didn't want to release us from her grasp this year. It snowed. It was windy. It was cold. The ice persisted forever; then in an instant it was gone. This blog post is like March. Persist and you'll be rewarded when you get to the end. I've been playing around with video this month both using my Nikon D7100 but also a borrowed Fujifilm X-T1 mirrorless camera. It was simultaneously fun and frustrating to be playing around with video. Once you have...

Great Meadows Concord: Feb 20, 2014

http://www.greatmeadowsconcord.com/2014_02_20_archive.html

Thursday, February 20, 2014. With the two to three times a week snow storms ranging from feet of light fluffy snow to several inches of frozen rain / sleet / wet snow mix the question that New Englanders are asking each other is, "Have you had enough winter yet? Unfortunately, that means that I have been ignoring Great Meadows. While it can be interesting in the winter, I must admit visiting is a bit more work in the winter, than it is on a warm summer's morning. With so much snow it's packed everywhere.

Great Meadows Concord: My Project

http://www.greatmeadowsconcord.com/p/my-project.html

Capture the spirit of Great Meadows Concord over the course of an entire year.". That simple sentence is the vision behind this blog. It started as a simple photography project. Last autumn while walking at Great Meadows I was thinking about the changing seasons and the different things I had noticed during the year. I wondered what it would look like if you could compress time and pull the seasons together photographically. Are you going to put them on the web? What if the day isn't interesting? I hope ...

Birding with Kenn and Kimberly

Thursday, September 15, 2016. Although Kenn and I were away from home and missed it, two more baby turtles hatched! And while our hearts might be a teensy bit sad to have missed it, we couldn't be happier that our dear friend Tiffanie got to share this experience with her daughter. In fact, after looking at the pictures and seeing the radiant, happy smile on Delaney's face as she released these tiny bundles of life, we wouldn't change the way these two baby turtles came into the world for anything.
