I think my personality had a lot to do with the kind of midwife I became. A lot of my hands off attitude was not due entirely to my "with woman" philosophy, but with my fear of screwing something up if I didn't know how to do it! Tuesday, February 5, 2008. Strip mining and epidurals. I witnessed a beautiful vag birth tonight. a baby girl oozed silently into the world, thick with vernix and bathed in amniotic fluid. she was pink in seconds and flew right to her mama's breast, unhindered by gravity or any other worldly tethers. I don't think epidurals are smart, but i don't blame women for getting them. In a world where no one trusts, loves, or respects our bodies, how can we? It's where the education comes in, though, i think.

Sunday, March 23, 2008. I totally love and respect all the stay-at-home-dads (SAHDs). Mine is the best! You guys take shit from patriarchal bastards, deal with whiny kids all day, and support your partners' decisions/rights to have a job outside the home. I like my job. i don't love it; it's a job, you know? But i surely like it better than any job my partner had when i was pregnant, new mothering, and/or going to school. and i make twice as much money as he did. that helps. My mother wears combat boots.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008. Worst of the worst. I was just reading navelgazing midwife's blog. About post-partum hemorrhage and thinking about home birth. I never really thought about the possiblity of there being a problem with both baby and mom when i had my home birth. wow. what an ignorant mama i was. Thankfully i had a great outcome - as most mamas do. but what if i hadn't? What would my midwife have done? Who would she have saved? I live at least 50 minutes away from a hospital with an OB dept or an OR.

A lot More than most people in this time and place want to admit. Its kind of scary to admit that birth matters, because you don't get a second chance at a birth. Once its done, its done. Even the word "birth" is almost never (in mainstream culture anyway) used as a verb -. And yet, it is something women. Many women aren't very active at all when they are delivered - not physically, not mentally, not spiritually. And that is a huge loss, which some of us are only now consciously starting to miss.
