Jeff's Musings – Observations and accumulated wisdom

Observations and accumulated wisdom. Earned Value, Velocity, and Predictability in Software Development. Perhaps one of the least well-understood concepts in agile project management is velocity. Jeff's Musings | What To Expect When You’re Consulting: Professional Services 101

http://blog.jeffshurts.com/2014/01/what-to-expect-when-youre-consulting-professional-services-101

Observations and accumulated wisdom. What To Expect When You’re Consulting: Professional Services 101. This post is for those in my field (software development) who have recently gone into consulting, or who are considering making that transition. The differences are in your new set of relationships, and in the way you are perceived by others. The differences are not technical – they are very human. The goals aren’t. Your client, and specifically the client manager you report to, is likely measured (and ...

Jeff's Musings | The Importance of Managing Expectations

http://blog.jeffshurts.com/2013/12/the-importance-of-managing-expectations

Observations and accumulated wisdom. The Importance of Managing Expectations. Everyone loves watching the Olympics. There’s the drama of human competition. National pride. The exuberance of youth. Dramatic moments. And, of course, world records. But wait – isn’t this a blog on the subject of software development? The people whose opinions matter – your bosses, your client, your product manager – have no clue that what you just accomplished was insanely great. Indeed. The point is this: In order to be...

Jeff's Musings | Ruby on Rails: Serious Software?

http://blog.jeffshurts.com/2011/03/ruby-on-rails-serious-software/comment-page-1

Observations and accumulated wisdom. Ruby on Rails: Serious Software? Fifteen years ago, this often meant opting to continue to build mainframe-based applications using stalwarts like COBOL and CICS rather than upstarts like Java. Today, it means avoiding modern languages and frameworks like Ruby on Rails, favoring the safety of the familiar – Java and C#.NET. This set of experiences has had me thinking lately. How much could be accomplished in large, established companies – which tend to have ...Having ...

Musings of an Agile Coach. Among other things, an agile Coach. Based in Chicago. Thinking great thoughts about being agile, and hearing great thoughts from others! Lower case 'a' because I believe in agility, not the dogma that Agile has become. Or insert your provocative title here! A tweet by my mentor @SAlhir. Alerted me to an article about possible dangers of mindfulness. I’d love to know what the Buddhist Geeks. But we are complex beings with many more levels, that is, levels on which we do. After a...

Musings of an Agile Coach. Monthly Archives: November 2014. Burndown Charts That Suck #1. Over the past year or so, I’ve collected some burndown charts that illustrate some team problems. I don’t want to tell tales on past clients, so no names will be revealed by me. And for that matter, people always mean to do their best, but sometimes it’s an emotional challenge to fix things (see the second to last paragraph below). Stories not broken down into small enough pieces. The second is a more emotional issu...

No Scope Creep | Agile Coach Jacque

https://agilecoachjacque.wordpress.com/2015/06/26/no-scope-creep

Musings of an Agile Coach. In an agile environment there is no such thing as “scope creep”. There are only better ideas. Amen, amen, amen. He hasn’t expanded on that tweet in a blog post (afaik); but really what more is there to be said? I suppose saying it gives those who don’t know what it means the opportunity to ask “what does that mean? 8221; which could then be the subject of a blog post. But this is just words. That tweet expresses such an important idea. This entry was posted in Quick Bites.

There Should Be Some Fun | Agile Coach Jacque

Musings of an Agile Coach. There Should Be Some Fun. We’re working with a slightly-distributed team. So after we do our standup, I often take a picture of the physical wall to share with the remote stakeholders. For this, I use the panorama mode of my phone. When team members are willing to have some fun together–as illustrated by this image–I think you’re on the right track to a solidly-performing team. This entry was posted in Quick Bites. In an eight-minute talk with about seven minutes of Q&A, Michael Cohn describes his own experiments with tracking personal commitment and progress. Cohn is talking at a personal level, but the things he says make a lot of sense applied to teams, as well. April 17, 2014. I’m interest...

Musings of an Agile Coach. More on “The Curse of Allocation”. Recently, I re-discovered a post written by my friend Len Lagestee. Entitled “ The Curse of Allocation. Len lays out five important problems that arise from allocating people to multiple teams or projects:. Lack of team bonding and connection. Lack of ownership and accountability. Len’s post is a good one, and I encourage you to read it (and add his blog, Illustrated Agile. To your regular reads! Enforce the terms of allocation. August 12, 2013.

Musings of an Agile Coach. I’ve written a post titled “ Lowering Risk Using Agile and Lean Methodologies. 8221; for the blog at Pathfinder Software. Here, I’ll post a summary, and invite you to link on over to Pathfinder’s blog for the full version. Leave a comment in either place. I’m interested in three kinds of risk that are mitigated by using agile and lean processes:. Building the wrong features or the wrong design (“UX”). This entry was posted in Quick Bites. One man and his camera. Photography from Naperville, Chicago, and Beyond! Tuesday, January 29, 2013. As I've mentioned before, I don't do a tremendous amount of food photography. But I certainly enjoy it when it happens. That's probably because I get to "sample" some of the items when we're done taking pictures of them. And by "sample", I mean "eat until I can't move any more.". You should definitely give them a try if you're in the area. Posted by Jeffrey Ross at 1:34 PM. Links to this post. Posted by J...

Posted 7 years ago. Roasted Garlic Oregano Butter. Allow ⅓ cup of butter to soften in a bowl. I usually cut it up in cubes as it’ll make it easier to “cream” the butter later on. Take a bulb of garlic and take off as much of the outer skin/paper as you can. With a serrated knife, cut off the very top part of the bulb to expose the inside of each clove. Drizzle with olive oil, season with a bit of salt and pepper and wrap up in a piece of aluminum foil. Place in a 350º oven for 45 minutes to an hour.
