Living on the Line: February 2007

http://bordernoreen.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Living on the Line. Sunday, February 25, 2007. Can I use the holy water too? Last Wednesday at about 3 o’clock, I walking through campus to my afternoon class, and a girl walked past me with ashes smeared across her forehead. I don’t know if anyone else found this to be odd, but I certainly did not. In fact I was a little surprised I hadn’t seen more of it. You see, in Bisbee I was the oddball; the one walking around without. The ashes on my forehead. When I was in high school. I was one of the few w...

Living on the Line: A Walk Through My Front Yard

http://bordernoreen.blogspot.com/2007/04/these-are-views-from-different-sides-of.html

Living on the Line. Sunday, April 8, 2007. A Walk Through My Front Yard. These are views from different sides of my house. Illegal immigrants come over these hills and head towards town. This is a wash directly in front of my house. It is hard to see in the pictures above, which is exactly why the illegal immigrants use it as their path into town. The illegal immigrants leave behind clothes, water bottles, backpacks, gloves, etc. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In front of my home in Bisbee.

Living on the Line: March 2007

http://bordernoreen.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Living on the Line. Sunday, March 25, 2007. Border Town Fashion. Yes, it's different. There is no doubt about it; fashion in border towns is different from the rest of the U.S. Hispanic style had a significant impact on the fashion and trends we followed. Older members of the community might not have felt this influence, but as high school-aged teenagers, everything from the way we did our makeup to the kinds of shoes we wore reflected Hispanic style. One of the other makeup trends was wearing thick, dar...

Living on the Line: Enough about me already

http://bordernoreen.blogspot.com/2007/03/enough-about-me-already.html

Living on the Line. Sunday, March 11, 2007. Enough about me already. Let’s hear from other people to find out what they did and did not like about growing up in a border town. Serena Sullivan, 22:. 8220;I liked being able to cross the line to drink and go party when I was 16,” she said. “I also liked being able to go over there to buy food or have dinner,” she added. Serena also said she enjoyed experiencing Mexican culture. 8220;We don’t have as much culture over here,” she said. David Gallaher, 22:.

Comida Sin Fronteras

http://comidasinfronteras.blogspot.com/2007/03/have-you-ever-been-to-mexican.html

Monday, March 5, 2007. Have you ever been to a Mexican restaurant and heard or seen somewhere in the restaurant that the food is authentic? Why do they say it is authentic? I have found that many Mexican restaurants I have eaten at claim to get their food directly from Mexico. This got me thinking about what food is imported from Mexico? How much does the U.S rely on food imports from Mexico? What is exported to Mexico from the U.S? According to the U.S Department of Commerce. The major imports from Mexi...

Comida Sin Fronteras

http://comidasinfronteras.blogspot.com/2007/03/mexican-food-chains-are-appearing.html

Monday, March 19, 2007. Mexican food chains are appearing everywhere. While driving earlier today I couldn't believe how many fast-food chains I saw driving down Speedway. What caught my attention was how many Mexican fast food chains I am seeing and go to more often. Chains like La Salsa. According to an article in the Daily Utah Chronicle. Mexican fast food is the hottest thing going, as people on the go are looking for alternatives to burgers, sandwiches and pizza.". Here are a few commercials:.

Environmentally Friendly: Crossing the border is for the birds

http://renswords.blogspot.com/2007/02/crossing-border-is-for-birds_05.html

Monday, February 5, 2007. Crossing the border is for the birds. Last fall, President Bush signed the Secure Fences Act. That will provide close to $2 million to build a 700 miles of fence along the US-Mexico border. Environmental and humanitarian activists and other agencies and groups in opposition of the act seem to think the term "fence" is a dire understatement (some compare the notion to the Great Wall of China and the Berlin Wall in both physical and political light). Will be threatened by a wall.

Monday, April 9, 2007. One of many stands selling Indian Fry Bread. In front of the church. The end of holy week for the catholic religion resulted in many people visiting San Xavier del Bac Mission. Affectionately called "The White Dove of the Desert." It is south of Tucson and on the Tohono O'odham land. The church primarily serves the Tohono O'odham but is open to all for tours and services. There are many different ways to make fry bread and many different things you can put in it. The Borders of Edu...

Comida Sin Fronteras: January 2007

http://comidasinfronteras.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Mexican food. I love it. What can I say? I'm Mexican and I know what the real stuff is. I grew up making tortillas and eating beans and rice almost at every meal. I love going to fiestas and bodas because they always serve up the best of Mexican cuisine. From tamales, tacos, enchiladas to horachata I have had it all and I love most of it. Driving through the streets of Tucson it's obvious plenty of other people love it as well. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Mexican Tourists: Citizenship Through Taxes

http://mexicantourists.blogspot.com/2007/04/citizenship-through-taxes.html

They are only here to spend money. Monday, April 23, 2007. Taxes were due last week and I, like so many people, was stuck giving good ol. Uncle Sam my hard-earned cash- in this case, $63 to the Arizona government. I only hope that they use some of it to give more funding to the universities. Illegal immigrants are using their taxes to build a foundation in the American system, so that when they do apply for citizenship, they have a background to pull on to bolster their case. However, thanks to wild gene...

Mexican Tourists: Tucson: Because It's Closer to You Than Any Other American City

http://mexicantourists.blogspot.com/2007/02/tucson-because-its-closer-to-you-than.html

They are only here to spend money. Monday, February 12, 2007. Tucson: Because It's Closer to You Than Any Other American City. While not the most eloquent welcome message to potential Arizona tourists, my dad's blunt message gets the point across for which so many visitor centers aim. The Metropolitan Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau has taken the general idea and molded it into an invitation to come and see all that Tucson has to offer. The second picture, of the Mexican tourists in Tucson (really!

Mexican Tourists: March 2007

http://mexicantourists.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

They are only here to spend money. Monday, March 26, 2007. The Lure of Border Retail. One of the biggest draws for people from both sides of the border crossing into the other country is shopping and the chance to buy things that they can't get in their own country or things that are difficult to get in their own country. Generally, what people from the U.S. buy when they visit Mexico is very different from what people from Mexico buy when they visit the United States. Local American artisans as they are...

Mexican Tourists: Objectivity: Going the Way of the Greek Gods

http://mexicantourists.blogspot.com/2007/04/objectivity-going-way-of-greek-gods.html

They are only here to spend money. Monday, April 09, 2007. Objectivity: Going the Way of the Greek Gods. This semester, I have learned that objectivity is not as easy as that. I think my best example of my change came last week, as we were covering the St. Andrews Clinic, a clinic on the U.S. side of the border that provides free healthcare to people from the Mexican side of the border. And it freaks me out. But I am still freaked out. Posted by Amanda H. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Borders o...

Aprendemos Espanol

I signed up for free Spanish lessons via e-mail called Jiffy Spanish Lesson. I get an e-mail once a week with a link to a free Spanish lesson. This lesson was on vocabulary for family. For a student who has a small foundation in the language or who isn't. Exposed to Spanish at all, the lesson would be helpful. However because of how basic it is, just a list of vocabulary words, I was not impressed. This is the 10 th. Add to my Page. I like that the course gives the opportunity to repeat after each new wo...
