Sometimes the Best Things are the Smallest. Today was a special day for me at the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory. BBBO), I started training to become a 'net picker', learning how to safely hold the bird and remove it from the netting. Some of the birds are just so TINY! Three other Palm Warblers were banded at the same time as the one I picked. Here the banders are comparing wing and tail feathers as they age the birds. Braddock Bay Bird Observatory. Here we are tieing the very fine catch nets onto the support poles. Kim D and I are learning from veteran Betsy who has been volunteering since 1976. Cape Florida Banding Station. Monitoring migratory birds since 2002. Quiet mid-October so far. October 19, 2014. We did get a male Wilson’s warbler on Oct 17, described by one of our volunteers as looking like ‘a Hooded warbler with a toupee’. The male’s glossy cap is distinctive but the female does resemble the closely-related Hooded. The Wilson’s is a bit smaller with no white in the tail, has a very different call, and is very active.
