Brigid In Kenya

Sunday, May 8, 2011. Finished Murals and Other News. Hello Blog Readers, again my apology for being spotty in my recent posts. So let me start with the murals. They were completed last weekend and look amazing. Some of you already got a sneak peak so this is a repeat. This mural is about the importance of education and says in Swahili. MONEY WHEN USED DECREASES BUT EDUCATION WHEN USED INCREASES. This mural is about the beauty of one's community and says in Swahili. GO EAST, GO WEST, HOME IS BEST. The sec...

Brigid In Kenya: Nairobi Trip

http://www.brigidsafricanadventure.blogspot.com/2011/03/nairobi-trip.html

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Modern health care (notice the towel). I cannot believe I let Olivia take this and am posting it! In the taxi headed to the hotel. I looked like death warmed over! In front of the National Museum. Note I had on a jacket. It was a nice morning! Brigid and Olivia at the museum. Yes this is a real elephant. In front of a cool statue at the museum. The front of the Karen Blixen House Museum. The entry to the museum. At the restaurant near the Karen Blixen museum. I had a hard time b...

Brigid In Kenya: The Mural Project

http://www.brigidsafricanadventure.blogspot.com/2011/04/mural-project.html

Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Yes this is what I walk through to get on the matatu. A matatu in rather good condition. The climb up the hill from the ferry on the Mombasa side. Once on the Likoni side my fun does not end. I must then navigate the gauntlet of the local market place with thousands of people, weaving my way through rows of smelly dead fish and other delightful smells! Me climbing on my boda boda for the ride to Hatua. First day of class students learning some of the basic concepts. Side of the r...

Jewels of Kenya: May 2011

http://jewelsofkenya.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 14 May 2011. Mombasa has a population of around 940,000, although it feels like an overgrown village rather than a thriving city. It started out as a trading post for the Arabs over 1,000 years ago. Here is the Wikipedia link: http:/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mombasa. Mombasa from the air. The famous Tusk statues of Mombasa. These are the symbols of Mombasa and are included in the city seal. Snapshot of the city. Typical view of the city streets. The 2 ladies in the foreground are typical Musli...

Jewels of Kenya: June 2011

http://jewelsofkenya.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Monday, 13 June 2011. Here in Kenya, President Obama is a HUUUGE deal, especially since his father was Kenyan. Kenya is one of the few African countries where being from the US doesn't cause resentment or anger. When I say I am from the US, people instantly say "Obama! With big round eyes. When I say I'm from Chicago, their eyes become even wider and they say "OBAMA! Once I did get "OPRAH! I was in this lady's shop when I noticed she had on an Obama kanga (a wrap women wear in Kenya, just like a dress).

Jewels of Kenya: Maasai Village!

http://jewelsofkenya.blogspot.com/2011/03/maasai-village.html

Thursday, 17 March 2011. 2 weeks ago, I went to visit a Maasai village during our safari in Maasai Mara with the other people participating in my program. It was incredible. These are some photos from the trip. The Maasai decided to greet us by singing a traditional song and doing a traditional dance. Their song consisted of the men saying a deep-throated "HOOOO! Tyler, one of the other interns here from Washington D.C., decided to join me and the Maasai in our singing and jumping. I did not ...This is a...

Life shrinks and expands in proportion to one's courage… Anais Nin. My First Hospital Visit →. March 30, 2011. What really kills me were how many mothers were in the group and seeing the children that were there tagging along at the meeting. You wish you could erase the uphill battle they never had a chance to change from the start. For what seemed like forever. I headed straight home in hopes of avoiding Rueben, the overly-friendly night security guard before he started his shift. The many food options ...

Life shrinks and expands in proportion to one's courage… Anais Nin. My Buddies at the Fruitstand. The Cat’s Out of the Bag…. May 16, 2011. I have many notes and entries backlogged in my journal which I plan to still post. Many include some interviews with HIV clients, more stories from the field work and travel tales from cities like Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Vienna and Krakow. She was completely shocked to see me when I walked into the room and even more shocked that we had slipped this past her! For now...

Patron of poets, scholars, and nuns. Sunday, December 25, 2016. Hymn rewrite] Away in a Manger. In this humble feed trough still half full of grain,. Placed there by his mother, worn out from her pain,. Lies Jesus Messiah his first night alive. Through groaning and bleeding our savior arrives. Though Mary's exhausted the baby won't sleep. He whimpers and fusses and then starts to weep. With weary arms Mary lifts him to her breast,. Croons, "Jesus, I love you, but please let me rest.". One of the tasks of...
