Purple Ink: All over but the shouting
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2008/09/all-over-but-shouting.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Friday, September 05, 2008. All over but the shouting. A big fat pile of nothing. With a generous side order of hypocrisy. Good Christ on a bike (as a friend of mine used to say) it simply cannot be possible that the country will be taken in by this pile of crapola AGAIN. Right? What’s his response to Obama’s message of reform? For the record I agree the whole teen pregnancy thing should be out of bounds in the media coverage ...

Purple Ink: Conversations with a toddler
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2006/08/conversations-with-toddler.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Friday, August 25, 2006. Conversations with a toddler. Outside the pony enclosure, the other day. I am holding the Peanut in my arms as we watch the ponies. Peanut, absentmindedly fingering my bra strap: Mommy bra. Me: That's right, I have my bra on. Peanut: No (Peanut's real name) bra. Me: That's right, you're not wearing a bra. Peanut, thinking for a minute: No pony bras, either. With the Peanut about bras.). Peanut, giving ...

It was so long since I logged into this site that I wasn't even sure it would even still be here. But I'm glad it is. I have a lot to talk about, and time on my hands now to do it. As I said when I started this blog in 2005, I intend to write to please myself. Once again. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What's this all about? Best of Purple Ink.

Purple Ink: Can we at least agree on this?
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2013/09/can-we-at-least-agree-on-this.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Wednesday, September 18, 2013. Can we at least agree on this? Obviously people are fiercely attached to their opinions on the gun issue, one way or the other. But it seems obvious that people with known, documented mental health problems and a history of arrests for violent activity. Should be banned from buying guns. It seems that if we can't even come to a consensus on that much, we're screwed. What's this all about?

Purple Ink: Thoughts on my grandparents
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2008/03/thoughts-on-my-grandparents.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Thoughts on my grandparents. To the tenement jungle of New York. My grandfather toiled with untold numbers of other Italian immigrants to lay bricks and mix cement, building Manhattan from the ground up. My grandmother? Well, she gave birth. Someday I want to tell the Peanut their stories. How her Italian ancestors helped build New York, and how the Chinese immigrants, ancestors of her daddy's fami...

Purple Ink: Communication
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2006/07/communication.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Friday, July 14, 2006. Yesterday, during my work-at-home day, the Peanut's babysitter left once the Peanut went down for a nap so she could get some errands done. When my girl woke up, she was calling the babysitter's name. It's just mommy for the moment," I said, lifting her onto the changing table for a quick change. "Is it OK if it's just me for now? She stood up so I could pull her pants back up. ". What's this all about?

Purple Ink: The World Stops When Bizarre Things Happen
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2009/10/world-stops-when-bizarre-things-happen.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Friday, October 16, 2009. The World Stops When Bizarre Things Happen. Posted by Broadway Carl. How else do you explain the nonstop coverage of today's story about a runaway balloon. Allegedly with a six-year old boy along for the ride? Nothing happened on the health care front. Everyone forgot to criticize President Obama's trip to New Orleans. Yet we were mesmerized by the balloon story. That silver, mylar, flying...Even when...

America loses 2016 Olympics and "WOOHOO! He couldn't seal the deal! This only proves that the world really hates him. Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize and "WHAAAA? What will the right say? What will Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity and *gasp! Rush Limbaugh say about it? Prescriptions at the airport? So let them f...

Purple Ink: And more on guns...some serious questions
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2013/09/and-more-on-gunssome-serious-questions.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Monday, September 16, 2013. And more on guns.some serious questions. Here are some questions nobody ever asks. And if anybody did ask, nobody would answer anyway. 1 If you don't plan to commit a mass murder, why would you need to buy a military-grade assault weapon? What else are these things good for? 2 Why is it legal to sell weapons of war to civilians? 4 Why for Christ's sake are those "no questions asked" gun shows legal?

Purple Ink: Other people's sex lives
http://virginiaspurpleink.blogspot.com/2009/10/other-peoples-sex-lives.html
Musings/rants/essays on politics, journalism, literature, mommyhood, and more. Monday, October 05, 2009. Other people's sex lives. A guy cheated on his wife? These things do happen. Dog bites man. Not a story. I've been reminded of all this in reading the tons of ink spilled on the David Letterman adultery story. Did the guy break any laws? If not, why does the media feel inclined to beat this story to death? Don’t I have more pressing things to worry about? How immature am I supposed to be, exactly?
