Two by the Sea: January 2013

Sunday, January 27, 2013. Down Under part I. In November I embarked on a three week trip to Australia as I mentioned in my last post. Mindi is a great cook and appreciates good food so I knew I was in good hands. We had a blast! View from the front door on Silver Gull Lane. Newcastle is the nearest large city. Sydney is about 2 hours away. Coal mining is the primary industry in Newcastle. We drove into Newcastle on my first day to run some errands and have lunch. My first meal in Australi...He won't eat ...

Sunday, June 1, 2014. Kissing the Boar in Firenze. Well I mixed the first packet with some "bottled" water and kept it down until I was settled in my seat near the bathroom. That came up. I decided to forgo taking anymore until we arrived. In Florence, our hotel, the Ambasciatori. Strangeness. We used the room safe just to be safe. Vilia saw this while walking around as I slept. I would have loved to have tasted that Spaghetti w. artichokes and pork belly. Can't believe I missed this too! There were many...

Friday, August 30, 2013. Tripping around the Finger Lakes Region of NY. I just got back from a two week trip to the Greater Rochester area in New York State, which is situated near 11 Finger Lakes plus one of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario. My brother's daughter, Emily came out to see me for 10 days and I accompanied her back to Rochester. Bob picked us up at the Monroe County airport and spirited us back to his beautiful home in Penfield. The warm slightly humid air felt great! My nephew Jacob showed up ...

Saturday, March 23, 2013. No worries, the Aussies do not just eat Vegemite they in fact eat very well thanks to a new breed of creative Chefs. Lamb is their staple, especially for Sunday dinners. It is roasted or grilled and served with pumpkin, potatoes and a green vegetable if available. Pumpkin is any winter squash in Aussie lingo. The Binnie household carries on the tradition. And the "up the gut" entertainment section. Mommy and Pat's snack. Harrison getting his "crank" on. I happened to be in Austr...

Two by the Sea: July 2013
http://twobythesea.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 28, 2013. Last February I traveled to Italy with my friends Vilia and Mike Wray and their daughter Nate ( think Jean Nate). Nate found a great deal for a "tour" of three cities, Rome, Florence and Venice. We added three extra days to visit Sienna and beyond. Everywhere you walk are artifacts and crumbling ruins of days gone by. This is old and full of cats. We headed back to the Mecante Palace Hotel through the primarily Asian neighborhood but the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Tay)and th...

Two by the Sea: Off toToscana! Day one
http://twobythesea.blogspot.com/2015/01/off-totuscana-day-one.html
Thursday, January 29, 2015. We departed the beautiful Venezia by train back to Firenze (Florence) where we were to take the SITA bus to Siena. Nate called the hotel, Antica Residenza Cicogna. To let them know that we were on schedule. The owner informed her that it was snowing, something that rarely happens. She hoped the bus would be able to get through. So did we! Check out the link to see the beautiful painted ceilings (the blogspot photo upload doesn't work anymore). Pork loin stuffed with truffles&#...

Two by the Sea: December 2014

Tuesday, December 23, 2014. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and bring on 2015! I hope everyone is filled with the Holiday Spirit. My baking is winding down with the last project being a Swedish Christmas bread that I haven't made in quite awhile. As a matter of fact I should be doing that instead of this but I just thought I better post something before the year ends. Christmas cards got out in time and so did the cookies. I made this Cranberry Meringue. This would be a great New Years Eve cake! First, f...

Sunday, March 2, 2014. Buon Giorno due-Hopping on and Hopping off in Rome. The phone was ringing and it was 9 am. We almost slept through breakfast! Vilia, the light sleeper got us up and moving. The restaurant was on the Garden rooftop, a few staircases away. Up we went to a beautiful room filled with light and Citrus trees outside the windows. You could step outside to an amazing vista of our part of the city. It was a sunny, brisk February morning. We were really here. Jaw dropping Marble carvings.

Sunday, September 15, 2013. A Bzzzzy Visit to Keuka Lake. Anne Leach has been my friend since we were in Monroe Community College together. There is a lot of history here! We did not get together often over the years as she was raising two kids and working in the BOCE school system along with the fact that we live on opposite coasts. Whenever we do get together it is like we saw each other yesterday! The radio station that I tuned in happened to be "The Wease Show" on 95.1 The Brew. Dinner was had at the...
