Burmese Daze

Monday, August 18, 2008. Back at the Blog. OK It's been 10 months since I posted anything. It's not that nothing has happened here since the government crushed the monks and the protestors; I just really lost the stomach for it. Then came Cyclone Nargis and the government's craven, larcenous, callous response to it and I got very upset and depressed at the whole situation. More later; I just want to get this out there to re-start my blogging habits. Posted by xuanzang @ 7:07 AM. Ten Days of Turmoil.

Burmese Daze: Things are getting warmer in Yangon

http://burmesedayze.blogspot.com/2007/09/things-are-getting-warmer-in-yangon.html

Tuesday, September 18, 2007. Things are getting warmer in Yangon. As well, state newspapers, radio and TV are full of angry denunciations of protestors, Western diplomats, the NLD, Aung San Suu Kyi and anyone who opposes the government. Movies on the only pay-TV private station in the country are being interrupted constantly so that more denunciations can be broadcast, much to the annoyance of those people who have paid money to watch movies uninterrupted by commericals. Burmese Daze: January 2007

http://burmesedayze.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 07, 2007. Dec 30, 2006. As 2006 draws to a close, I find myself thinking about the last couple of months of happenings, rumours and stories about life in Burma. Just a few random thoughts about this strangely surreal country, populated by some of the nicest people on earth and ruled over by some of the foulest. The Great Train Caper:. Death of an Activist:. The Land of the $20,000 Beater. Google Earth and the Junta. One speculative reason advanced as to why the capital was moved is that t...

Burmese Daze: October 2006

Sunday, October 01, 2006. First Impressions of Burma. September 30, 2006. Having been in Burma for a few months now, I will finally have a chance to post these musings now that I’m leaving the country for a while. What with the extensive scrutiny of Internet traffic that goes on within Burma, it seems prudent not to upload these posts inside the country. We have a Burmese web-based e-mail account which seems to work reasonably well, except that attachments are sometimes stripped off by their server. ...

raoul-mp-myanmar-2011

Saturday, October 5, 2013. Tuesday, August 2, 2011. In September 2010 we returned to Myanmar with the money we had raised. Our first task was to change the donated money into Burmese Kyats. There is no regular banking system in Myanmar, so at Yangon's central market we searched out a moneychanger. Since the largest currency note at the time had a value of approximately 1$, we ended up with a large sack of money! By that evening we were on the bus traveling south. Every day we would spend time there. ...

Burmese Daze | Travels in South East Asia

Travels in South East Asia. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. About me and my blog. April 29, 2014. Cars and vans queuing to be ‘cleansed’ during Thingyan in Yangon. After the cleansing we decided to go and dirty ourselves again by having a final beer before our month of enforced temperance offshore. Due to the festivities, virtually no bars or shops were open so we headed to Paddy O’Malley’s Irish bar at the Sedona. Except on public holidays. What’s in a name? April 20, 2014.
