the rest of the rhubarb – CAKE AND DECAY
https://cakeanddecay.wordpress.com/2016/07/13/the-rest-of-the-rhubarb
An existential food blog. The rest of the rhubarb. July 13, 2016. July 13, 2016. So let’s talk about rhubarb. I realize that we are just about at the end of rhubarb season, and that I should probably tell you about the rhubarb recipes I haven’t had the chance to post about yet. There was of course the rhubarb semifreddo. I’ve also been adding raw rhubarb chunks to Marion Cunningham’s nutmeg muffins that I wrote about here. Sweeter off the Vine. Posted in The Everyday. Nova Scotia – CAKE AND DECAY
https://cakeanddecay.wordpress.com/2016/06/30/nova-scotia
An existential food blog. June 30, 2016. June 30, 2016. Tomorrow we’re getting on a train and leaving for Quebec. A year ago we were getting on a plane and leaving for Nova Scotia. It is still strange seeing so much of a country I never gave much thought to before we moved here. Canada was a vague mass,. Somebody else’s problem field. Over time it is becoming articulate, defined. Peter Veldsman’s Sjokolade-Truffel-Mousse. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Address never made public).
weekend – CAKE AND DECAY
https://cakeanddecay.wordpress.com/2016/07/15/weekend-4
An existential food blog. July 15, 2016. This weekend I’m finishing a skirt. And preparing for the (very first) houseguests we’ll be receiving here in Toronto. In the meantime, I leave you with this:. Since The Toast stopped posting I’ve been rereading old favourites, like this one on how the comment section of all articles on pubic hair grooming always look the same. If you’re sick of washing the dishes today, go read Silvia Federici’s Wages Against Housework. Manifesto, originally published in 1975.
ice-cream season – CAKE AND DECAY
https://cakeanddecay.wordpress.com/2016/08/13/ice-cream-season
An existential food blog. August 13, 2016. Summer is a dry spell for writing here – it is dissertation time, guests visiting from out of town, time for us to travel back home. But blogging is about nothing if not keeping momentum, even if it feels as though I have a lot on the stove and not that much emotional energy to think or write about it in an intelligent way. Pulped fruit, sugar, Greek yoghurt, some lemon juice. Mixed together and left to chill in the fridge, it allows you to wake up the next ...

Wednesday, May 13, 2015. One day in my twenties - after travelling through Europe for a year, I followed my nose from the pavement outside Harrods in London, all the way to the hallowed food hall. I stopped in front of some badly bruised fruit where I stood and wept a little. They were so expensive. And I missed home. In the back yard there was a very deep hole - an abandoned art installation. Mostly Jesse daubed on large canvasses on the floor. I served them for dessert, with Bird's custard. The next mo...

Friday, July 31, 2015. I am fascinated by shade plants - especially the indigenous South African bulb varieties. I bought a winter red hot poker or forest lily bulb from the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden's shop last year, with no indication of colour. In february I noticed the tip of a flower bud appearing - like the spear of a baby asparagus. Since then, it has developed, ever so slowly. Even though there is thick snow on the mountains of Ceres and the nights here are very cold, the garden is waking up.

http://thecapetownsourcerer.blogspot.com/2015/07/robin-chat.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. In a quiet, mossy corner of the garden, a robin has made her nest. For days it was empty, then there was one egg and on the next day, there were two. Perhaps there are three now, but we keep our distance. Last year's eggs didn't hatch. The gate is out of action for a few weeks, we tippy-toe nearby and draw the bedroom curtains as slowly and quietly as we can. Extra peanut butter is put out daily and now we wait. Labels: a bird in the hand. July 22, 2015 at 6:20 PM. It's an irrit...

Friday, July 17, 2015. Apothecary jars sit on the windowsills, full of porcelain shards and other bits and pieces collected over the past two years. Marbles, buttons, glass stoppers and lost limbs. Last time we were at Churchaven, we met a man on Boerplein who took us back to his tiny house and showed us some of his finds. He gave me the piece with the temple on it, and wanted me to take more. We dream of living there, but I could see that he was very lonely. Even the birds stopped to listen. It's an irr...

Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Whose woods these are I think I know. It's poetry. So rich in metaphor that I have to stop after each paragraph to reflect. A single nightjar wing, and the imprint it left upon a muddy track in Ethiopia. In one of the walled gardens, there is a weeping mulberry and thickets of Leonotus Leonurus. Lion's Tails - minty and furry. Wilde Dagga. Tiny red leaves fiddled their way to the floor, floating slowly, pellucid and pretty, while gravity seemed to push them back up to the sky.

Friday, November 28, 2014. In the garden the fennel has grown taller than me. In the evenings I water and I long to spend more time there. The turmeric is shooting up by a foot a week. I brush against the bergamot bush and think of Aida. People are wonderful, and terrible. Mostly a bit of both. Tuesday, November 18, 2014. There have been cats. There have been cats in my life that I have loved more than humans. Thinking of Estorbo, and the woman and the man. Saturday, November 8, 2014. Singing in the dark.

Saturday, January 31, 2015. Have you lost something? A strange pair we make - walking, bent over, scanning the veldt. Concerned people want to help us find what it is we are looking for. How to explain the thrill of finding fragments of a distant daily life? On a ramble three weeks ago, I found a particularly intriguing shard of porcelain - the letter "O". Exactly one week later, I found the entire plate at the Milnerton Market. That's the kind of synchronicity that makes one gasp. The name is a caress.
