The lighting within the narrow wall passages is better than dim but not by much, so those of a claustrophobic disposition may choose to get their pleasure from the exterior features. To enter the castle you must cross the water filled moat, sadly a feature lacking at so many other sites, though the wonderful Caerlaverock. Castle presents a fine example.
