April | 2013 | Science Of Education Blog
https://cathscienceofeducationblog.wordpress.com/2013/04
Science Of Education Blog. Monthly Archives: April 2013. April 22, 2013. So we’ve come to the last blog already; this semester has flown by! Looking back at the first lecture in January, the thought of writing a blog and commenting on other’s work on a weekly basis seemed very intense. This was without the presentations we had to present every other week! If we consider other modules, they usually have big assignment or exams at the end of term. This results in us (myself anyway! Cramming everything in t...

Science Of Education Blog. April 15, 2013. Before researching into anxiety, I didn’t know writing anxiety actually existed! After researching into anxiety, I have learnt that there are a variety of forms which can affect individuals on a daily basis; from nervousness during presentations to lack of participation in smaller groups. However, there are many strategies to control these effects effectively. 6), 647-656. Doi: 10.1111/j.1944-9720.2002.tb01903.x. Kessler, R. C., Berglund, P., Demler,...Liu, X...

Science Of Education Blog. April 22, 2013. So we’ve come to the last blog already; this semester has flown by! Looking back at the first lecture in January, the thought of writing a blog and commenting on other’s work on a weekly basis seemed very intense. This was without the presentations we had to present every other week! However, this soon became enjoyable again; choosing my own topic for the first few weeks and then investigating deeper into one in particular that interested me which was anxiety.
Relax, it’s only a test! | Science Of Education Blog

Science Of Education Blog. Relax, it’s only a test! February 25, 2013. After a lot of thinking and deliberation over the last week, I finally decided on a blog topic for the next few weeks; Anxiety. Hembree (1988) identified a number of causes of test anxiety;. While considering these, it is obvious that test anxiety occurs at a personal level and will differentiate between each individual due to these causes and effects. It is important to recognise that there are different levels of test anxiety;.
Reducing Anxiety | Science Of Education Blog

Science Of Education Blog. March 18, 2013. Over the last few weeks I’ve discussed different forms of anxiety ( test. Individuals may not have access to medical facilities. Individuals may become dependent on this drug. When considering treatment for writing anxiety, the first thing that I thought about was practice. However, this is easier said than done for many. Salovey and Haar (1990) examined different treatments for writing anxiety and compared three different groups:. Combination group cognitive be...

Grades are Up | Science of Learning 2013
https://sciol13.wordpress.com/2013/03/19/grades-are-up
Science of Learning 2013. Science of Education Coordinating Blog 2013. Your grades are finally up. Good job. I have really enjoyed your blogs this week, and I’m not going to mention the ones I thought were great, because the list is getting too long. There is one that I will mention however, more because of the discussion and thinking behind that than anything (the blog was great as well). That is Sarah’s blog. That said, looking forward to Thursday, and then the Easter break! March 19, 2013. You are com...

Science of Learning 2013. Science of Education Coordinating Blog 2013. Final Blog (except for your reflection). I can’t believe it is over again. Good job. There were some great syntheses, however, there were far too many lists of what you had covered in your previous blogs. A synthesis needs to highlight what has emerged in your thinking as a result of having done all this research. For too many of the blogs, it was just a recap of what had already been covered. Stereotypes in education | psud02
https://psud02.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/stereotypes-in-education
A blog about the Science of Education…. Skip to primary content. February 18, 2013. This perhaps explains how the majority of stereotypes are negative I could make a list, but I would manage to offend almost everyone reading this, so I won’t J. If we continue to inflict negative stereotypes on children at such a young age, they will continue to become true, perpetuating not only defecits in education, but difficulties when children feel under pressure to stay within their gender ‘appropriate’ stereotypes.
Are these skittles the best idea? | psud02

A blog about the Science of Education…. Skip to primary content. Are these skittles the best idea? March 18, 2013. In my last few blogs I’ve talked about different types of motivation, all the while ignoring some of my personal experience. I’m sure (or at least I hope! We’ve all done what I’m doing now for every 50 words, I can have a skittle. This for me is my main motivation to do this blog, in direct contrast to what my previous blogs have stated! Negative Punishment something positive being taken away.
Week 3 – How important is sleep? | Alec's Science of Education Blog

Alec's Science of Education Blog. Getting an education was a bit like a communicable sexual disease. It made you unsuitable for a lot of jobs and then you had the urge to pass it on. – Terry Pratchet. Week 3 – How important is sleep? Studies in other countries have also found children reported higher levels of fatigue and sleepiness from early starts (Epstein, Chillag, and Lavie, 1998), and 43% of children have difficulty waking up, while 25% do not feel well-rested at school. It also found many othe...
Discovery Learning | Science of Education Blog

Science of Education Blog. In Wales since 2008 discovery learning is used in classroom through the ‘Foundation Phase’ (Play Wales, 2006) between the ages of 3 – 7 years old. They claim the reason for doing this is that it will help the child to develop personal and developmental skills, in addition to motivation and self- confidence. An additional problem of discovery learning is The Michael Effect (Stanovitch, 1986) which suggests that children with a good background knowledge in reading and mathematics...

Possible ways to cope with stress. FINAL blog-reflection blog →. April 15, 2013. I have focussed my topic over the weeks on exams, the types of questions used in exams, the effects of exams and how we can overcome these effects. I began by talking about the testing effect ( https:/ ekennedy92.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/the-testing-effect/. I then extended this to talking about ‘deep’ questioning and thinking ( https:/ ekennedy92.wordpress.com/2013/02/25/deep-questions/. Graesser, A. C., Lu, S.,...Huppert, ...

Science of Education blog. 2 hours of P.E should be compulsory! Stereotyping and the self fulfilling prophecy →. Stereotypes in education… gender issues, social class and environment factors. February 25, 2013. So what is stereotyping, how is that related to the education system and what effect does that have on individuals and society? Another article by the telegraph (2010) also suggested that the stereotypes made by teachers that boys are badly behaved compared to girls are holding back boys in school...

Conformity in Lectures | Science of Education
https://bethseducationblog.wordpress.com/2013/03/11/conformity-in-lectures
It seems that conformity has its advantages and disadvantages. It will allow a lecturer to teach a large group with ease due to students conforming to expectations of quiet note-taking. It will also allow for control but is that really necessary for university students. To me the disadvantages of conformity are much more detrimental to learning and it may be worth steering away from large groups in order to reduce conformity. Groups, leadership and men. Pittsburgh, PA: Carnegie Press. However I have to d...

Science of Education blog. A topnotch WordPress.com site. Skip to primary content. Assessing assessments. Part 3: Coursework: Cheating your way to a grade A? March 11, 2013. For this blog I wanted to delve into coursework as a form of assessment and to see whether there were benefits from coursework over exams. Personally I find coursework so much easier, my coursework grades were always higher than my exam grades and part of me wished I had picked a degree that was weighted more heavily on coursework.
