http://cathyscostumeblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/brooch-for-sale.html
Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog. This blog is about historic costume, primarily Western costume, from the dawn of history until about 1600 C.E. Thursday, April 30, 2015. Last weekend, I drove to Michigan with my husband to attend a science fiction convention. While I was at the convention, while digging around in the tote bag I took along to hold personal items I wanted to be able to grab quickly, I found a surprising item. This item:. This brooch is, as best I can tell. It's item no. Z-15)...
Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog: The Greek Head Wrap, in wear
http://cathyscostumeblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-greek-head-wrap-in-wear.html
Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog. This blog is about historic costume, primarily Western costume, from the dawn of history until about 1600 C.E. Wednesday, April 1, 2015. The Greek Head Wrap, in wear. Having tried to put on the head wrap about half a dozen times and looked these photographs over, I have a number of observations that may be worth thinking about:. If I make another such wrap, I will use a thin, narrow, tablet-woven band instead of thick wool. I believe the resulting wrap would...

HSM #3- A Greek Head Wrap, Completed! The head wrap, laid out before use. A few minutes of rustling through the boxes and piles that comprise my "stash", a few hours with needle and thread, and voilà! A head wrap, as shown in the photograph to the left. (Click on the photograph for a larger and more detailed view.). Based upon J...

Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog. This blog is about historic costume, primarily Western costume, from the dawn of history until about 1600 C.E. Sunday, January 25, 2015. The brooch and beads, on the white wool for the shift. I'd meant to spend January making the "foundation" garment for my early Norwegian and völva. Outfits- a long, white wool tunic. January started busy, but I figured that I'd have plenty of time to start the project on Martin Luther King Day weekend ( i.e.,. Note: The reconst...

Loose Threads: Yet Another Costuming Blog. This blog is about historic costume, primarily Western costume, from the dawn of history until about 1600 C.E. Saturday, May 9, 2015. Because the textile-making technique now known as sprang. Was definitely used by early Scandinavians, as the Borum Eshøj find and other contemporaneous archaeological finds attest, I have been planning for a while to learn sprang. To make hairnets- the ancient Greeks. Does not use a weft, but consists of twists carefully made on p...

Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Granny squares - testing a new pattern. Last night I found this exciting granny square pattern. I'm sorry it's only in Swedish) and I just had to try it. Here is the result! And when on the subject, do you have any favourite granny square versions? I'd love to see more! Do you know of any that fits together (in size) with the traditional (at least, the one I've heard is the most traditional here! You can see them in the second pic.) granny square? Links to this post. No sewin...
Handicraft by Agis: November 2011
http://agiscraft.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 7, 2011. My ancestry (old photographs.). A new show is airing on tv here in Sweden, in which a bunch of americans rediscover their Swedish ancestry. Watching the show ("Allt för Sverige", which by the way is great! Has brought up thoughts about my family history, and I've been looking a lot at old pictures from the early 20th century. I find it interesting in so many levels! And lived with his family in Uppsala. I am also a bit fascinated by what is going on in the background of the pict...
Handicraft by Agis: Homemade yoghurt!
http://agiscraft.blogspot.com/2012/12/homemade-yoghurt.html
Friday, December 7, 2012. As I grew up I knew that yoghurt somehow came from milk. Still, I had gotten the impression that one couldn't make yoghurt at home, because. well. just because! This notion stayed with me until just a few weeks ago, when I stumbled upon a recipe for homemade yoghurt. At first I thought "wow, this must be for those people who raise cows! But looking closer I finally understood that no, this was something ordinary people could do in an ordinary kitchen using ordinary milk. Actuall...

Handicraft by Agis: Making perfume
http://agiscraft.blogspot.com/2012/11/making-perfume.html
Thursday, November 29, 2012. This morning the landscape outside my window had turned crispy white, beautiful. Moving on. It's perfume making time! I am out of perfume. Empty bottle, nothing left. And at the moment I can't really go spend lots of money on new perfume (it's disgustingly expensive, isn't it? But though I've moved out from the city and turned into a lantis (the swedish equivalent of a 'hillbilly') I'm trying not to become a complete. Slob, and thus I still wanted new perfume. As I said, I ma...

Historical living with Hvitr: May 2015
http://hvitr.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Historical living with Hvitr. Wednesday, 27 May 2015. I finished the working class mantua. And took some photos last night. In period it would have been worn over a couple of petticoats, but I don't have the petticoats to go with it so you will have to imagine them. I do plan to make the petticoats, but they aren't as interesting to construct as the mantua itself so I haven't done them yet. Here you can see the bodice and skirt drape:. The draped skirt looks really nice from the back:. It's based on exis...

Historical living with Hvitr: Deciphering a palaeolithic textile
http://hvitr.blogspot.com/2015/07/deciphering-palaeolithic-textile.html
Historical living with Hvitr. Monday, 13 July 2015. Deciphering a palaeolithic textile. For HSM challenge 7. I'm reconstructing a headband found at El Wad in what is now Israel. The headband was buried with its owner, who came from the Natufian culture. And lived in the El Wad area during the palaeolithic. In this blog post I'll talk about the process I'm using to reconstruct the headband, and why I think it's likely the original headband was made this way. Remember, radiocarbon dating gives dates as BP ...
