Ornaments made from shells were used in the palaeolithic Levant. Fortunately we do know what the headband looked like, so I've been able to reconstruct it. Aldrete and colleagues note that the laminated linen construction can withstand getting soaked (Alexander's army, after all, was crossing rivers in this armour).
