Sunday, March 30, 2008. Vietnam (12th - 31st Mar). The owner saw our puzzled looks and came over to help. After just one night in Kon Tum we set off for Da Nang in a Mercedes Sprinter mini van, quite a luxury after days spent on public busses in Laos - so glad there were seat belts though! We later realised he had paid for our onward bus fares to Hoi An (our next destination)! We were dumbfounded by this unexplained generocity and couldn't work out what we'd done to deserve it! And 'you buy from me?

Thursday, February 14, 2008. Pai (9th - 15th Feb). Things are much quiter and more tranquil now though. Each night there's live music and many of the eateries here serve delicious organic health food- bliss. Most of the street stalls sell handicrafts from the neighbouring hilltribes, on a couple of occasions woman from one of the tribes have come to our hut to try and sell us bags and hats. We weren't expecting the Lahu village to be quite as small and undeveloped as it was, we were pleasently surprised!

Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Bangkok (5th - 9th Apr). We're in Bangkok again - whoopie! Its great to come back to familiar territory, eat in our favourite cafes and soak up the buzzing Khao San Rd atmosphere! And the best thing is we can do all of this without getting any flights which is good news for Jim and good news for the environment! Extending our travel's gave us time to hop by ferry from Penang to Medan in Sumatra (Island of Indonesia) Although when we first arrived here the hideous lack of development and embarassingly crude approach to ripping off tourists was enough to send us running back to the safety of malaysia - a trip to the tranquil world of Lake Toba was exactly what we needed to calm us down! Wednesday, 13 February 2008. It later transpired there was a reggae festival on somewhere near by and the place was heaving as a result! Sunday, 2 March 2008. It was really strange to hear the local Lao people chatting away in French! Accommodation and restaurant prices here were a bit of a shock, and it seemed apparent from the word go that this place was a real hit with affluent middle aged westerners! However we managed to hunt out a good place to stay for 10 dollars and quickly settled into the laid back groove of the place. Saturday, 3 May 2008. Thailand - Railay Bay. After yet another brief stint in Bangkok we headed down south towards Malaysia - stopping off at Railay Bay (Tonsai Beach) in the Krabi province. This is without doubt the nicest of Thailand's beaches and due to the spectacular rock formations is very popular with climbers, so has a fairly cool vibe. Its a pretty authentic island-esque experience as the beach is only accessible by boat or a pretty intense climb over some cliffs! View my complete profile.
